Omas trouble

I wonder if I am alone or it is a problem with the brand. I have several Omas pens, not one of them starts right up after sitting overnight.

Any comments?

Thanks

Of the dozen or so I own, all start immediately.

I just reached for my one Omas, and it didn't start right up (never does). Once it's writing, it's a great pen. I counted - it took 8 circles before the ink flow was consistent.

It might be interesting to see if there is a pattern, for example, all of my OMAS pens are old style design pens except for one new style Milord.

Three of mine are post 2005 , one is older style and one is vintage - never had this problem with any of them .

My one is a Bronze Vision 360. Starts up wet and luscious every time.

I have one of these and it is an awful starter.

What brand of ink do you use?

I was actually about to ask you slimnib what brand of ink are you using in your Omas. Are you using Noodler's?

Almost all of mine have no problems starting in the way you describe. I think I have one, probably from the early 80s that's not such a great starter. It's one of the first Arte Italiana Ogivas, it's numbered.

I suspect GP is using Herbin in her Visions.

Ink could be the issue. I usually use Skrip, Waterman, Quink or Diamine in mine but sometimes Noodler's Navy, Antietam and Navajo.

Mine started up if I used it daily. But if I left it for a few days it wouldn't start immediately.

I don't seem to have an issue with this in any of my pens. Interesting.

I generally use a Private Reserve ink. However, I am going to try some other brands to see if I can get better results. Otherwise I am going to get rid of all my OMas pens. A pen that does not start right up is useless as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for the replys

Or, you could get a nibmeister to fix them.

Vegetal resin Omas pens have more trouble to start right away after being stored for a while; the ink dries in quickly in those.

Celluloid Omas pens have never caused any troubles and just start writing like most other pens.

Cheers

Michael

Mine is a new Milord. Guess I need to start looking for a vintage Omas...

I'm using an Omas cartridge.

Sometimes with cartridges like converters, the ink gets stuck high and doesn't contact the feed. On my few C/C pens, I sometimes take to flicking the barrel or the converter to force the ink down. My piston and plunger Omases don't usually have that problem, only if I leave them nib up and haven't used them for two or more days -- but it doesn't take 8 circles to get them going.

I never use cartridges only converters. So perhaps switching to a different brand of a wetter or higher flow ink, e.g. Waterman, might do the trick. I've used Omas blue ink before and the flow wasn't as much as say Waterman. Omas blue is beautiful ink but kind of pain to flush from a piston filler.

Not a statistical evidence, so I think I've been lucky.

My three cotton resin 360 (piston fillers) all write at the first stroke, even after several days (they usually rest in horizontal position).

They are:

* B bronze Vision (exactly like GP's) - J.Herbin Cacao do Brésil or PR Shoreline Gold (lusciously wet)

* M Magnum size - N's Navy (medium flow)

* F full size - J.H. Blue Myosotis (a bit dry)

Very different "nib personalities", same reliability.

Harv, i got my first Omas, an older celluloid Ogiva a few days back. It is exceptional and no starting problems, in fact I am using MB blue black in it.

Best,

Hari
