Pilot 78G Converter Explosion

Recommended Posts

Exploded. All over my hands, notebook and bedspread.

I'm so traumatized right now I don't think I'll be using Private Reserve Sherwood Green for a while. My hands look alien :crybaby:

I was happily doodling along when I noticed that my index finger was turning green. I looked at the pen and opened it up to see what was going on in there. (Okay, so I probably should have done that over the sink) Anyway, I unscrew the barrel and everything comes pouring out just like that. Apparently, the converter wasn't screwed in properly.

I washed the pen out and fiddled with it, but I can't get the converter to "snap in" or stay put securely. It just kind of "sits limply" in there and if I shake it hard enough, comes off.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a trick to this? Do I have a lemon on my hands?

Help!

Edit to add: It's one of those Squeeze Converters...

seems like a con20 coverter, should be a firm fit, if not, then I think you got a dud

I'm a little hot potato right meow

"no they are not making littler ponies, they are EMBRACING"

I opened a box of cheerios and planted them. I thought they were doughnut seeds. They didn't sprout :( (joke of the week)

Was this the first time you used the pen? Did it come with the converter when you bought it? There have been some Pilot 78gs available on FPN that take Waterman-size converters and carts. Pilot's will not fit. I don't think there is any easy way to tell except for eyeballing the nipple size in the section and comparing it to the opening on the converter. Or else try a Waterman cart in there if you have one.

You should also check to make sure the nipple in the section hasn't broken off, bent, or otherwise been damaged. When installing a converter you shouldn't twist it unless the pen's manual tells you to. Pilot converters usually take a surprising amount of force to get on and off, so if everything looks undamaged you may want to try giving it a little more oomph.

There's a thread somewhere on FPN about leaky 78Gs. Some of the pens are fine, but others leak. I even replaced the converter on mine, but it still leaks, and I will not buy another 78G for this reason.

Wow, that doesn't exactly give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I'm a newbie and just ordered three 78G's (an F and two B's) based on glowing recommendations from numerous FPN members. I hope I haven't made a mistake.

FWIW, my 78G is great. And for $12 a piece, at least it's not a big mistake...

This has me wondering how a 78G would be as an eye-dropper.

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

Still a no-go on the converter.

Good news is, it seems to be a dud converter as opposed to a dud pen - I got another one of these converters and that one stays in fine. Haven't inked it up yet, but I have my fingers crossed.

But Eyedropper! Oohh... now that would be fun. I just might try that...

I would first figure out where leak is. If it's leaking through the feed, converting it to an eyedropper won't help. If it's leaking on the converter side, then the eyedropper idea would be great.

I seem to remember someone having a similar problem with a Prera and a CON-20, because I tried to trouble shoot this way back in 2007. Maybe the CON-20 is not super reliable?

I also converted mine successfully to an eyedropper. Thanks for the suggestion, fatehbajwa.

Go ahead with the ED..........u wont regret it.

How do you convert it to an ED? Just smear silicon grease on the threads? Do you need an O-ring?

I didn't need an o-ring for two of mine. I think there are enough threads for silicone grease to be sufficient.
