Check out Hero 5020 and Baoer 388. Both Parker look-a-likes (isnt that a nice way to put it?). Both write well and are dirt cheap through ebay from sellers that I have found to be very good.

when you cant tell the difference without a really close look...eg reading the brand name on the barrell

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I don't think Montblanc invented the torpedo shape. In fact, they were very late to the party if the Sheaffer Balance counts. In that case, Montblanc itself is a knockoff. People just think that they're more original because they've popularized that shape so much. It's like the way Sony first came out with keyboards that have separated keys, but now that Apple has made that a feature of their laptops, everyone tells me that my Vaio "totally knocked off Apple."

 

A knockoff pen would have to more carefully mimick another pen, not just share the same basic shape. After all, there are only a few shapes out there for pens. Imagine if Montblanc made an insanely popular flattop, then how many more MB knockoffs would there be out there?

Perhaps what the originator of this topic had in mind was a list of pens that look (and generally write) like expensive pens but at a far lower price. For example the Baoer 388 a is virtually indistinguishable from a Parker Sonnet, but isnt a fake.

Wait, how do the Pelikan and Waterman nibs look anything like any other nibs out there?

 

If you say that Sailor is a knockoff of Montblanc because it looks similar and followed MB, then MB is a knockoff of all the similar pens that preceded the 149. You can't really knock off something that wasn't completely original in the first place.

In my opinion the 1911 is not only the same "shape" than the Meisterstuck. But even if you stop at this, you should admit that the Balance is a torpedo but has a totally different shape on the round edges, while the Sailor and the Montblanc share the same overall proportions.

 

But in addition to that, the 1911 has the clip, the trim and the cap bands (that were originally three and then were reduced to two because MB was suing them....) which are designed after the MB.

 

However I agree that knockoff is a too strong word, and "heavily inspired" would be better.
