Pen Shop Directory

Recommended Posts

I tried clicking on the link provided (www.penshops.info) but my browser could not find the page. I then erased the "www", using just "penshops.info" and the page opened just fine... :headsmack:

After checking this page, I wonder how up to date it is: I found "Swisher Pens" which I believe closed down more than a year ago. :hmm1:

I moved the site to a new server recently and neglected to add the 'www.' in DNS. Sorry about that. It's corrected now so you ought to be able to access it with or without the www.

It's very possible that there are out-of-date entries there. It's hard to keep on top of all the changes. The site is supposed to be user-maintained. I do a lot of data entry but I can't do it all.

When I click on the link to that list, I get a nice page stating Pen Shop Directory is currently undergoing software upgrades.

Any chance it will be back up soon? It's a great idea, & I would like to see what's on the list. Maybe I could add some of my own...

Yea... I was wondering the same thing, as it is a really useful resource. It has been like this for a longtime.

They are back! I tried to add one shop in my country, it seemed to be accepted, but I'm not seeing it on the list, and there is one error message about Notice: Undefined index: admin_menu in menu_block_view() (line 486 of /var/www/vhosts/penshops.info/httpdocs/modules/menu/menu.module).

that keeps popping up in my browser. I also don't see a help option available. Splicer, if you're following this, could you help?

Sorry, these two things were directly related to one another. The "Undefined index" error was actually quite harmless but I had a dickens of a time getting rid of it and left the site offline while I was trying to fix it. Eventually I gave up and put the site back online since it was just a scary error, it didn't actually indicate a real problem.

Then I got a report about the error, which reminded me to dive back in and I was able to get it sorted.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Might have spoken too soon about the error messages being gone. I'm hoping the ones I'm seeing now are only visible because I'm the admin, but if not I apologize. The messages appear to be harmless "warnings" rather than errors but still, I'll try to get them sorted.

Hi folks—

I've sorted out many of the technical issues with the site, but spammer attacks have increased tenfold just in the last few months. I've therefore stopped allowing anonymous users to submit new shops or edit the old ones.

Just an FYI. I can't please everyone. When anonymous content editing is allowed I get complaints about obscene content in what used to be a legitimate pen shop. When it's not allowed, people get bewildered by the process of choosing a username and password. But spam was coming in faster than I could revert to earlier revisions, and that does no one any good.

This is what I was told after omitting "www." (before that, I couldn't connect at all):

penshops.info

You've requested a page that currently is on the Incapsula network.

Incapsula was unable to connect to the server.

I hope, the site will be back!

Also can't seem to find any pen shops in Hong Kong and am visiting at the end of Aug. Has no one listed any shops in HK? Thanks, Rajesh

There are two but not that great a range. It's for rich expat tourists. Not much ink

I don't quite know how active this website really is... But I went to add a store that's located in Costa Mesa... The address I put is was defaulted to San Francisco (I also noticed, that a lot of other locations are shown as San Francisco...........???)

Here's a screen shot of the page I created, can't find it live yet.

I was not able to create an account, I got an error message. I was able to add a store here in little old Hampton but unfortunately put my name in where the name of the shop is supposed to be. When you have a moment can you fix that? Thanks so much for the site, much needed.

Edit: Never mind, it gave me the error message but setup the account anyway. I was able to login and fix it. One thing I did notice is the site seems to give the same address in San Francisco for all shops. Might want to look at that.

Great idea - though as you point out, it'll only work if people pitch in.

I was recently in the central German town of Goettingen and saw an interesting shop. I did try to add it - even got a confirmation message - but it doesn't seem to have worked (and the confirmation message lists the address as being in San Francisco, in line with mdbrown's comment). SO: to ensure that the information is available, here it is again:

NAME:

Wiederholdt

ADDRESS:

Prinzenstrasse 14

37073 Goettingen

WEBSITE:

http://www.wiederholdt.de/

NOTES:

Traditional specialist stationer - in business since 1770. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly.
There is a decent selection of pens, papers and inks - unsurprisingly, the focus is on German brands (they have a large selection of De Atramentis inks).
They seem to sell at manufacturer's recommended retail price.
Correct as of June 2014

GENERAL NOTE ABOUT GERMANY:

You have pen-ink-and-paper buying options in most German cities: department stores like Karstadt (http://www.karstadt.de/) or Galeria Kaufhof (http://www.galeria-kaufhof.de) have branches all over the country and tend to have decent stationery sections. They can be pricey, but sometimes they have sales.

So, if you're going to any reasonably-sized city in Germany, try a department store if you don't have local information on specialist stores.

Also, I noticed that Goettingen University has an on-campus shop selling some decent pens, inks and paper (including Rhodia notebooks). I don't know if that is usual at other universities, but I guess it's worth a try.

PS:

The drop-down location menu does not seem to be alphabetically-sorted - e.g. the UAE comes first, and the UK is listed after France. It's not a long list, but it is a little confusing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
