Hello all!

I found this site via Badger & Blade, and was enthralled by the discussion and information available.

A little about me, I suppose: I'm a 21 year old college student studying Cultural Anthropology, with a minor in Linguistics, and Religions, with a minor in Philosophy. That much work can be a tad stressful, but the subjects are a heck of a lot of fun. I also teach and assist in English at the college I am attending.

Outside of academia, I am an artist, craftsman, and tech geek. I throw clay, turn wood, make fountain pens, restore antiques, build watches, build computers, program operating systems, design web pages, do black and white film photography, regular old digital photography, and build audio equipment out of tubes.

The anachronism should fit right in here, and perhaps my knowledge of pen making will carry over and allow me to become a useful member of the community.

I think we need somebody to do a participant-study of the culture of FPN and its denizens. Could you be the one???

Welcome to FPN!

Ufff... You are a busy man http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/sweating.gif. Welcome to this community.

There is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat, and we must take the current when it serves or lose our ventures.

Welcome Matthew -

Such a broad course of study must demand pages upon pages of notes every day. I can see how a good fountain pen would be needed to save you from the knarled claw of writers' cramp.

Have fun here.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

You've all hit it squarely on the head with my course of study and level of writing (~10 A5 leaves a day, assuming no drawing), which I've found now calls for a very good implement of writing, and a very good journal for which to write in. Plus the proper fountain pen in the pocket will go nicely with my pocket watch and cane.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
