Levenger's Smokey

This is a nice gray, however I could not get it to scan true to color. It is a good solid gray however it is not as dark as the scan appears - however, this is the best that I could do.

Good review! Thanks for scanning and posting it.

You didn't mention bad paper. Have you tried it on bad paper?

I try not to write on bad paper - :ltcapd:

The worst I could find it 20 lb copy paper and it does not feather or bleed through.

I hope this helps.

Yes, many manufacturers' 20-pound copy paper (sorry, I don't have time right now to look up the metric equivalent) fits the fountain-pen definition of "bad paper." I'm glad to hear this ink does well on that stuff! I'm also glad you have such control over the paper you must write and mark on :)

Looks like a wonderful color of ink! I went to Levenger and they apparently don't carry this color anymore since I it is not listed on their site. I called their number and the woman seemed a little clueless. Anyone have some they want to get rid of let me know.

Just inked up my True Writer with this one, and nobody seems to have mentioned its rather remarkable water resistance!? As in: you put water on your dry writing and the only thing that happens is that your paper gets wet.

Looks like a winner.

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

I am actually considering buying the set of 6 Levenger inks that includes this color but I wasn't sure if they were good or not(I'm rather new to FPs). This has made my mind up thanks :)

I am pretty sure Smokey Grey is not available. If you found that set in eBay.. then go for it.

You can only find Greystoke at Levenger's website.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
