FPN Platinum and Nakaya gallery

A modest opinion: Pens are beautifuly crafted and this costs money. The problem comes when the nib adjustment is not perfect. B and M nibs may be almost forgiving but when it comes to F and XF nibs, the adjustment may be very critical and personal, and may ruin the whole pen, unless you don't plan to use but to store it. A Nakaya nib, if propperly adjusted is a real pleasure (as many others in the market) and perhaps this is the reason for acciquiring a Nakaya at their site or an authorized dealer known for its nib work proficiency, unless the buyer has MUCH experience or luck. The slightest tine misalignement in a F or XF nib can be disastrous and an awful scratchy nib is the result where this same nib, if aligned, may be buttersmooth. I think that they are not overpriced, but care has to be taken where they are bought, and if possible, try them first. But this happens also to many other very well known brands.

beautiful collection Ruud, my question whether Nakaya is not overrated and overpriced.

Hello Dov, Nakaya is not cheap, but neither are Montblanc, or high end producers. I find the lacquer on the Nakaya pens absolutely beautiful, and so far I have had good experiences with their nibs. Everyday I use a Nakaya pen. I think that their possibility to personalize pens is working somewhat against them: it seems there is quite a bit of interest and on the other hand it takes time to answer such inquiries. Probably only a limited percentage of inquiries lead to firm orders, ie, the possibility for nakaya to recoup these costs. I vaguely remember reading once on their website that the minimum budget of a custom made pen is U$ 3000, but I cannot find that anymore, and lack of such a warning may lead to the expectation that adjustments to standard models can be relatively cheap.

I hope Nakaya will make a flat top once.

Here are two Platinums in my stable:

The larger one is a "Platinum Platinum", though mine has rhodium nib and not Platinum. (Thanks Dr. Ron, she is a beauty!). The smaller one is identical in almost everyway, but I have very little info on it...anyone care to help me with any info..

Hi Phil

Your Togi-kiri Crab is really spectacular. The way they used the silver powder and the base to resemble an indian ink drawing is absolutely finely done. This is a pen for the eye, and knowing Nakaya nibs... also for having quite a pleasure in use...

The Maki-e virus has bitten you... I warn you, YOU HAVE BEEN INFECTED! AND THAT'S YOUR FAULT!!! ... BUT DON'T WORRY, HERE ARE QUITE A FEW PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM THE SAME DISEASE, AND STILL KEEPING A SMILING FACE! :D

My Platinums are all indirect: 2 Kamakura pens, 2 Nakaya's. And one real Plat that Dov will recognize.

A Nakaya briar, to replace a Platinum briar that was snatched by a pickpocket on a train:

The Kamakura Pens Mikaeri Bijin and General Grant, based on the 3776:

The Nakaya "Cats with wool balls" from their special order section (a long cigar model to accommodate the picture):

Pics are not mine, I'm very clumsy with cameras, they are from the suppliers' websites.

There's also a Yaku Cedar pen, also 3776 based; no pic but looks like the Nakaya briar only lighter.

How I didn't noticed this thread before???

Excuse the quality of the photo, but it was done with my first point-n-shoot.

I LOVE Ruud's black one with raden trim. I'm a sucker for raden.

Actually, I love all these pens. They are gorgeous! :)

Guess I'd better get out the camera to show off my own beauties.

Elderberry, you have a lovely collection. I particularly like the Black Turtle. I have its cousin, the Red Bird, which is one of my favorite pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
