Hi folks-1st post...Recently acquired a MONROE mech. pencil. It's a nice pearl/black swirl.Good gold plating. On a rather narrow clip-turned up at end is only the word MONROE. On side is : 1st line=W, 2nd line=MONROE, 3rd line=GLORIFYING THE CANADIAN FOUNTAIN PEN, 4th line=TORONTO-CANADA, 5th line=DESIGN REG On top is a ribbed gold or brass eraser holder that is twisted to expel lead.Does anyone know if there should be some type of cap over this part? Would appreciate any info/picture of this m.p. Thanks-Wayne-Saginaw,MI

I'm resurrecting this (splendid) thread to observe that, over the next few hours, a good chunk of the Eclipse (and sub-brands) collection featured in the Pen World article mentioned above is going on the block. It's sad to see a collection like this get broken up, but exciting to see such an unprecedented flood of Eclipses on eBay.

Here's a few of my Eclipse pens. This NOS BCHR ringtop I picked up a few years back came with the original box, strap, hardware and packaging. Turn the warranty over and it's in French too. :happyberet:

I bought another ringtop at the same time and planned on saccing one to use, then I found a Wahl and a Conklin ringtop I could use so I decided to leave these Eclipses in their boxes.

Here's the second Eclipse ringtop I bought. This one is missing the box lid and warranty. Both ringtops have warranted 14k flex nibs.

I'll scan both sides of the warranty the next time I have the scanner out and post it.

Finally, here's a little GF vest pen I use. It's got a sweet little flex stub.

Ok folks:

Can anyone shed any light on this set. It's made in Canada, says Enduro but has the Eclipse Pen and Pencil Company on the box. It's a "modern" dip pen. I'll have to post several pics on this set. Was Enduro a sepreate company or a brand name of Eclipse, or was it soley made by Enduro and marketed by Eclipse?

on a french FP forum there was earlier this month a guy who had found an old unmarked bulb filler with an EN-DURO canada nib. the unmarked bulb filler barrel looked a lot like Ernst Bitterman's eclipse bulb filler. i thought that maybe there was a connection between Enduro and Eclipse, and now we have this, which is a bit of a proof of the connection.

this is a big pen! standard size: 5" capped, over 6,5" posted! the #20 sac is nice with a superflex nib.

i'll get that nib repaired by Greg Minuskin one day. i'm also considering to get it reground from medium to fine. then maybe installing it in a Reform 1745 :hmm1:.

Ha! I'm not so good at guaging pen sizes by photo. I've got a few really nice flexy nibs that need repair too.

I've bookmarked Greg's site. Thanks.

I have an Eclipse that looks almost identical to this. I'll try to post pics of mine when I get a chance. I love the pen, but the flow on mine is very irregular. :(

The three colored filigrees in my collection have black sections.

In fact, of the more than 100 Eclipse pens I’ve restored I have never seen anything but a black section.

Sorry for reviving a 15 years old thread :)

But, since this thread is already a very good of info source about the Eclipse Pen Co., I thought a link to this website is appropriate:

http://www.eclipsefountainpenandpencilco.org/

The website is dedicated to the Eclipse Pen Co. and, from the look of it, was not finished, and maybe Eclipse pens collectors and fans here can help the authors (if they are still at it) to complete it.

My Mary Jane has an Enduro nib, so more proof of connection.

I'm reviving a bit too.
My love has one from somewhere too, with a Matador 1 nib.
As my Parker 45 might be leaking a bit, I consider taking it to a fountain pen restorer in my country, Hungary. I offered him to have his looked at, so far he refused, even though he likes it.
My question is, could the gold plating be polished, renewed somehow? It seems like the top shiny layer came off quite a bit. It has "14k gold filled" engraved around its end.
It seems to be working with a fountain pen ink, I don't remember its name at the moment.
On the last photo you could see an Anci engravement, my guess is someone Hungarian had it personalized, engraved. Anci [an-tseeh] sounds like a kind nickname maybe for Anna, never heard it though.
(Sorry for the qualities of the photos, took these years ago and can only take new ones tomorrow evening).

I'm no expert in this matter, but when I attempted to get a waterman replated by a professional Silversmith / pen restoring company, this is the answer I got.

Question:
"Also are you able to re-plate waterman 0552 1/2 v and 0572 1/2v overlays? I am not sure what the base metal is, but it doesn't look like brass (looks gray). I don't know if its possible to re-plate them."

Answer:
"The overlays are gold filled, not plated.  It is impossible to re-plate over gold filling.  They are two entirely different processes, completely incompatible with each other."

It might be possible to strip the filling in its entirety and plate to an intermediate metal and the re-plate it to gold. No idea how it would look in terms of details / engravings / imprint.

I bought a replating pen , I only spent 40 dollars ha, as just bought the pen and felt tips and used an existing 6.5 volt dc output wall plug charger/transformer that was around.

getting the gold is more expensive to plate with, 70-100 dollars for a bottle but I'm still working on the same bottle bought 2 years ago. It certainly can clean up the gold plating although

often there is some surface wear in thin spots too which does not come out a shiny. and may need touching up but is fun and not unreasonably expensive.

Regards, Glen

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
