CONTEST: to celebrate Esterbrook's 150th Anniversary!

Hi there,

Thank you, one and all, for the kind words. It was a true privilege to take part, and I'm humbled to have been chosen.

For my part, I thought all the entries were superb. It's so true to the spirit of Esterbrook that this contest called forth so many wonderfully creative expressions (and such a warm feeling of good fellowship). Hobiwan, your recollections of your conversations with Ms. Esterbrook are heartwarming. I envy you (in the nicest possible way!) that remarkable personal connection to the brand and its history.

May I impose on everyone's patience while I try to decide between two splendid prizes? The results came as a surprise to me, and I hadn't given any thought to the choice.

Again: many, many thanks to pb2, to the judges, and to all my fellow Esterbrook fans!

Cheers,

Jon

I won?!? How fantastic!

Well, okay, yes, I know, I actually came in second. But, to me, that's still winning. :)

I just read Univer's sonnet, and I certainly don't mind coming in second to something that well done. I love the line "Content to be what it was meant to be:

An honest tool to fit a writer's hand." That says it all so well.

And thank you, also, to everyone for the kind words about my entry. My writer's ego needed that! ;)

Hi Andi,

Thanks for the high compliment. It's particularly meaningful coming from a writer whose piece so brilliantly evoked a vanished era that we can touch, now, only in memory - or through living artifacts like our dear old Esterbrooks.

Sincerest congratulations!

Er ... I forgot to mention...

I'm adding an extra thing or two to the Estie book, to make it something a little more special. I've always felt a bit uncomfortable about autographing the books. Happy to do it, of course, but never quite know what to say, wasn't sure I'd put the signature in the right place, handwriting a bit geeked at times, that sort of thing.

Anyway, I'm mulling over what to add...a bit of art, some family pics, mebbe. It may not compare to the Blue Streak, but it won't be "just the book". OK?

Paul

Best Regards
Paul

Congratulations!!!

The Indigo Streak is ready to fly, but not in a rush, so take your time, it's a tough decision.

However....there will only be one jazzed up version of Paul's book, The Fountain Pens of Esterbrook from what he said in his last message...

and you can always get a Pendleton Point smooth, crisp, cursive Italic nib for $20 (or $15 if you send me one of yours to grind).

Maybe this helps. =)

Sorry about that! I meant to post a reply earlier today, but got busy doing research. My mail carrier was very nice to me Wednesday; he delivered my prize, a personally autographed copy of Paul Hoban's The Fountain Pens of Esterbrook and a wonderful drawing that Fred Plewa did for Pen World in 1992 that lists an amazing amount of information about Esterbrooks from 1933-1945. (I assume the latter is a scan; I can' t imagine Paul would send me his signed original! :) )

The book is fantastic, and I had a tough time putting it down Wednesday and getting back to work. I also told my husband that we're going to have to get a frame and mat for the artwork; I've already got a spot picked out for it by my desk. :)

Thanks again to PB2 for running the contest, to the judges for thinking so highly of my entry, and to Paul for offering such a wonderful prize!

I know what you mean, I got my book today and I sat in my back yard swing and read the whole book at once.

Please do post a photo of that drawing, that would be so cool to see!

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!

I still grab my Hoban book once in awhile just to see if I see something new.

Hi Everybody,

I'm so sorry to have kept you all in suspense. As it happens, my prize arrived today (I know it would have been here sooner if I hadn't dithered about the choice!), and the Indigo Streak is spectacular. It's a deeper blue than any of my other blue Esties - really beautiful! - and the nib is superb. Great line variation and terrifically smooth. The pen would mean a great deal to me in any event, of course, because of the way it came into my life; but I foresee that it will have a special status by virtue of its writing qualities as well.

As a matter of fact, I struggled so mightily with the prize choice that I also wound up ordering a copy of the book from Paul. I'm very much looking forward to reading it.

This has really been a wonderful experience in every way. I really enjoyed all the entries, and it was a distinct honor to be singled out among such distinguished company. Thanks, everyone, for all the kind words. And thanks, again, to Pendleton, Paul and Lee.

Cheers,

Jon

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
