Taking a small break from pens.

Here is my Earth Day Bench

Finished last night

I have been wanting to make a bench for my mini lathe but I wanted it to all be reclaimed materials. So a couple of found bed rails, some square tubing and some skids and scraps from a cabinet place down the way here is my bench. The only thing I had to buy were the two patio stones for a solid top. Now I just have to find some thin plywood to make some dividers for the drawers and some sort of pulls and it is all done.

Chris

Total cost in materials $9.95

Sweet, but I'm sure heavy duty pallet timbers could have formed the top for nothing...

You are right but they seemed to have been all used up this winter for firewood. Been looking for 3 weeks before I finall broke down and bought the stones. They do add a nice bit of weight though which is nice.

Dan,

How can you keep your shop so clean & tidy? I'd die if I had to clear up often enough to keep it like that!

I love your drill press (serious envy going on here!).

Regards,

Richard.

Richard's right about the envy bit

How do you guys keep your workshops clean?

Every time I do a tidy-up I find "that bit" of wood/brass/FCMS...... and get stuck in - leaving the place in the same mess as before I started.

I went mad a couple of weeks ago with a labelling machine (found during tidying) and now I am the proud possessor of a neatly labelled mess

In my defence - I have popped the old vacuum beside the Myford, and am finally in the habit of leaving it spotless (and oiled down) after a session.

Wish I could say the same about the rest of the place.

Oh Dear!!

As I have a student coming down tomorrow from Northern Ireland for a full day "masterclass" I had no choice but to tidy up!

Finally found my wife - she was under some pitch pine and a pile of elm burrs

Probably should have left it messy :D :D

My new parts/buffing bench.

Got this one done on Sat. I holds all of my pen parts as well as all my taps etc.

The knobs are old elec. fence knobs that I found at an auction and they made sort of neat handles.

Nothing bought all reclaimed material.

Chris, I have seen a few of those on Kijiji lately and thought about getting one to replace my 7x10. That is a seriously nice piece of machinery.

Well done.

As mentioned elsewhere, I've been on the sick list for a while. I had meant to mention a couple of mods I added over the last year and am only getting around to it now!

First I finally finished the Potts milling and driling spindle, which (mounted on the swivelling vertical slide) combined with the dividing engine on the rear of the mandrel should allow for barleycorns, tartans etc. I'm looking forward to having a pop at these later in the year.

Also added a taper turning attachment behind the bed, so I now have the luxury of running off accurate tapers by the dozen, which is extremely handy or the classes :)

I'll pop up a few pics when I have a chance (at the moment it is ### cold out there, and I'm not rich folk who can afford proper heating) :(

Cheers,

Wow Boone, nice "shop" - looks more like a LAB! I'm ashamed to show pics of mine! Mine is in the basement, with separate rooms for Flat wood working and turning. I moved about 5 years ago, so the space was laid out as I wanted it from the start, just don't have fancy floors and walls (pegboard walls and foam-tiled cement floors.

I do have one item I'm proud of - about three years ago, I built my workbench. It's in the Traditional style with a touch of Greene & Greene styling (cloud-lift on the rails). The frame is Mahogany with wedged tenon joints, a 3" thick Maple top (and lots of Tung oil!). Took about six months to work up the plans, and another six to build.

The little Klidesdale "feet" are so I can adjust the height. The slide on the legs and allow me add a spacer to raise the top to my wall benches for when I need to work on really long work.

I also built all my cabinets. The one in the background of the bench pic has a rounded corner doors that I'm also kind of proud of.

Amazing Shop btboone!!! :notworthy1: I would never leave if that was my shop! Simply amazing!

My shop is geared toward producing chess sets and pen blanks! I make my own molds and cast my pieces. I plan to add a wood lathe, band saw and a scroll saw very soon!

I have a couple shots of my shop. This shows my new small mill. On the left is the lathe, on the foreground right is the laser.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
