I would tend to think that the tipping material in most, if not all nibs is not any of the gold mixes (14,18,24 etc) so the actual grinding would not need to be different for that reason. Considering Richard's comment about the variations in the make-up of the 18K nibs and the possibility of damage being higher with one than the other perhaps the extra charge is related to the risk in grinding that the nibmeister might have to replace one...?

I'm sorry, but I still don't buy it. I don't regrind a nib expecting to have to replace it. Obviously, I'm aware of the possibility, but the differences in material simply don't enter into the question for a simple regrinding. It's only when I'm going to straighten a nib or do a major realignment that there's anything greater than an infinitesimal possibility of bending damage to the nib itself.
