DOMINANT INDUSTRY - Soleil couchant à Étretat

Ink Review # 197

---

🧾 Description

Dominant Industry is fairly new Korean Ink-maker.

They are well distributed around the world. Ink comes in 25 ml teardrop bottles.

This ink belongs to the Painter series, some of them are standard, some shimmer. As of now there are 3 painters, Monet, Turner and Mucha.

https://dominantindustry.creatorlink.net/psearch/num/1/stx/painter

This is a standard ink. There is Les Falaise à Etretat but that’s a turquoise shimmer ink.

Ink is named after one of the first paintings of the Etretat cliff and arches in Normandy France.

Flow is dry, and ink has below average lubrication.

That being said, the writing experience differs depending nib & paper combination:

-        Lamy EF was scratchy on most papers, lovely on Tomoe River 68 gsm.

-       Stub was awful on all papers but Iroful and Hammermill.

Colour is pale with a dry pen and dark (thus legible) with a wet pen.

Shading is paper dependant:

-       Extreme on Iroful,

-       Good on Rhodia, Midori.

-       Faint on Tomoe River 68 gsm

-

I loved the color on copy paper.

 🎨 Artwork

Etretat, Between Dream and Mist

I used Tintenlabor Alpstein for the grey, though I added DI ink to parts of it.

Paper is Canson Water color.

 🛒 Availability

- [ ] Available in 25 ml bottles, everywhere.

 💬 Closing

This is paper, pen dependant nib. If you like dramatic shading it needs a dry pen and Iroful paper. If you want legibility it’ll be perfect on absorbent paper. If you dabble into ink washes, you’ll be in heaven.

No fountain pens were hurt in preparing this review. ;)

Please don’t hesitate to share your experience, writing samples, or any other comments — the more the merrier. :)

Nice review as always. Looks more like an ink intended for artistic creations like yours. But for "normal" writing of any ol' words or notes like mine, I'm not so sure. Keep up the good work!!

I think it'll work fine with wet pens. I didn't have enough sample to test it extensively.

Wet pen and absorbent paper, fine. Other than that, debatable. ;)

I can't type the ink's name but that is some impressive chroma-dragon.  👍🏻

I also love the photo and drawings!  And I have, let's see, Toits, Vert, and Blue Nose Bear.  Toits only works well in one pen, a Lamy ABC.

Your ink seems to make lovely artwork.   ❤️  But I dislike dryyyy unlubricated inks.

Thanks, @yazeh, I enjoyed this review, and you saved me again!   😸

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Great review, @yazeh!  You had me sold at "dry and below average lubrication"! ;) Throw in some extreme shading, and what more could I want? :D

That is a very funky chroma.  It might belong in a wizard's fire in a fantasy novel. :D

Good quotes.  I'm pretty "meh" about the color - these pastel-ish grey-ish greens don't really do anything for me.

But as always, the best parts are the drawings.  Do I want to know what happened to kitty's eyes on that swatch card? :yikes: (Or is that just the back of kitty's head?)

Whoa!  Stay away from the water! :D   But very cool effects in that drawing!  Great job there! Love it.

Thanks!

@yazeh Interesting color, although a bit on the pale side.  I suspect that this ink would do well in something like a Pelikan (especially with a broader nib) -- mine tend to be firehoses.

Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review and great artwork (I loved that one of the drawings was of the cliff and arches from the first photo).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I was sure you'd like that chroma and see the most amazing stuff in it. :) I have one funky IG with the funkiest of chromas. 🐲

That's one tough ink to please. :)

It's the beauty of these inks, great in art, especially when touching wet paper, but meh for writing. :)

I've never seen an ink that behaves amazing on one paper and awful on another! But yes, that's up your alley. I believe Professor @InesF last ink before vacation was this one. :)

Yep. It is. Normally, when you have chroma like this, it means excellent for washes. :)

It's funny for an ink named Sunset at Etretat, the focus is the color of water and not the sunset.

Here is the photo of the painting.

Monet was obsessed with these cliffs, rightly so, he did 15 renditions of it.

Thanks. I spent 90 minutes or so on this one. It was really fun to do, while her Majesty was having a lap nap. ;)

Nope, he's wearing sun glasses and mousey is taking a selfie. :)

It's the Nick Stewart system. Wet the paper, squeeze a drop and let the ink separate . :)

It would be perfect for Pelikan. The colour will darken and I guess the shading will disappear.

Thanks. I had a lot of fun doing it! I used another photo though. :)

Thanks for this!  I would have picked another of the series - the one they picked is definitely not my favorite. :)  Though I guess they were just looking for a unique color (with a famous name attached to it...).

An Arsène Lupin themed ink? Yes please.

I'm not sure if I get this one. Must be missing something, can find the link between him & Monet? Unless he was an impressionist ;) :D

The ink's name is really cool - and impossible to remember for more than a couple of minutes - and the colour looks really nice. But the rest is just meh! Not a writing ink, in my opinion: too pale, too much contrast.

But in your drawing, it looks totally gorgeous! This definitely is an ink made for artistic purposes.

:) It took me sometime to get used to the name, and I speak French fluently. ;)

Unless you use a wet pen.  But you know that don't you? ;)

Yes. It's made for this purpose. Many inks by DI are more suitable for washes than writing. I suspect that's the case for Wearingeul too. :)

No relation to Monet I'm afraid, just imaginary things like l'aiguille creuse!

I like imaginary things! I'm afraid I never got into Lupin. Or similar stories. ;) But we can't have it all can we? :)
