The Camera Never Lies !!

Recommended Posts

From time to time I take a photo of my handwriting in order to keep stock of my progress. When I look at my writing on the physical page, it looks quite good, but not so good in the photo. I think the main culprit is slant. While it has improved immensely, the photo often shows up some "rogue" words/letters. A little more work with slant guides are probably required. Onward and upward !! ✍️

I suppose it is the same as a musician recording him/herself so they can pin point their flaws and rectify them.

My goal at present is to get both physical and photo images to look more similar. I get inspiration from looking at the lovely photos of handwriting that is often shown here on FPN.

If the camera/lens is not perfectly square to the page it will lie to you. (distortion)

Add lightness and simplicate.

Try turning your writing upside down to check it.

Interesting. I'll give it a try. 🙏

I did so.

While it is great for showing words/letters that are not on the lines, it is not any better for showing slant deviations.

I appreciate your suggestion though, @Tasmith

It occurred to me just now, reading this thread, that you might consider getting a stand to put your camera or phone on so the photos would be taken at the same height and angle every time.  Of course I have no idea where stuff like that would cost, but you could probably check phototography shops or search online for such things.

I keep thinking about getting a tripod for my phone but end up not doing it (although sometimes I look at estate sale listings) for when I'm taking photos of my pens when I get them (especially the vintage ones) for my records.

@inkstainedruth: Another interesting suggestion. I don't have a tripod for my phone (which is what I normally use for taking my photos), but I do have a digital camera and a tripod, which I wil dig out and try.

Thanks for the suggestion. 🙏
