Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Bordeaux

This is review #334 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This ink was gifted to me by a generous FPGeek. While the microscope smear was interesting, it had nothing new, and the camera wouldn't capture the color to save its own life, so I didn't bother capturing it.

Cleaning was very quick and easy.

Banging sounds were the cats "fighting" against the door to the room I was in.

Zoomed in photo (A little too red, I think, but close. This gives the best idea of color.)

Screenshot (Text too de-saturated.)

Scan of Completed Review (On one monitor, it's quite close.  On the other, it's kinda desaturated and not quite the right color...)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (AP: Not splotchy to the eye, color looks flat, almost chalky to the eye.  CP: Color is pretty off. Should be more purplish/burgundy...)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 360µm, with twelve divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 340µm. With 334 inks measured, the average line width is 298µm.)

Another geat review @LizEF. Many thanks to Klaw and Smoke for the background noise. (I'm assuming one told the other, he was being retured to Amazon :lticaptd:)

I see that the Earl of Grey has returned back to exact vengeance and turn our heros into b& w characters.

The color look really nice and reminds me a of nice plush armchair on a Grey day.

Thanks for bringing light and laughter to this grey, rainy, spring day 🙏🙏🙏

:) Yes, this is a popular upholstery color.  I enjoyed it - it was pleasantly different from most of the inks I have.

'Gray skies, smiling at me...'

I have R&K Alt Goldgrün, and I like it.  This Bordeaux's a nice enough color that it may be an ink to consider.

O noz—-everything turning gray?  Can't wait to find out why.  @LizEF, thanks for the Kitteh Battle Plus Groaning Edition of EFNIR!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It didn't really want to be photographed, but the zoom is fairly close.  Regardless, I really enjoyed using it. :)  (And R&K are affordable!)

"The Summer smiles, the Summer knows"1 --- Patricia Kaas. One of the wonderful songs from Piano Bar ...

Thank you, @LizEF, for this inks review, for revealing our heroes' lack of waterproofness (it is always the grey remaining on the paper) and for making us nail-biting curious about how they may get their colours back. 🫢 :) ... if at all. 😳

... and: for reminding me not to go out without umbrella in case grey confetti rain is weather forecasted! :)

Yes, I love Alt-Bordeaux despite being of comparably low surface tension. So many ink producers offer a Bordeaux colour but no other is - colour-wise - so well balanced. And yes, I use Alt-Bordeaux only with EF or with extraordinary dry nibs.

Alt-Goldgrün and Alt-Bordeaux make a charming two colour combination, maybe, or not, because of "Alt-" in their names?

Looking forward to the grey ink hero ink review next Wednesday! :)

1) I associated: the new-Bordeaux ages during hot summer time, turning into Alt-Bordeaux! ;) :)

There you go, @yazeh, someone else who knows who she is. ;)   (I had no idea who Patricia Kaas was - I just copied some quote about grey skies off the interwebs...)

:) I did find it unusually pleasing - wouldn't have guessed I would enjoy the color as much as I did.  Next time I need to ink a pair of pens, I'll try "the Alts". :D

 It would have been nice to review a grey ink for this review, huh?  Oh well.  When you don't make plans, you can't complain when they don't work out. :D

Oh, all right, I give in!
I'll buy it then!

You FPN guys, you're nothing but a bunch of Enablers! ;)

Full disclosure:
I have been eyeing it for Some Time, as it reminds me a bit of Parker Penman Ruby, and because it doesn't appear to suffer from the worst behavioural excesses of the wine-themed Diamine inks whose colours appeal to me.

@LizEF -- Not really a color for me (although the fast dry time is making it tempting).   But thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.

:lticaptd: And proudly so!  Hope you enjoy it!  Put it in a dryish pen, or one that writes slightly finer than you'd like - it'll be perfect!

Methinks, in light of the comments of m'learnèd friends quoted hereabove, that Alt-Bordeaux just might be the perfect ink to run through my early-1970s 'Made in England' Parker 45 that has the 14k 'M' nib on it.

It's a bit 'dry'-writing, even for a 45, and the line it lays down is a tad too narrow for me.

I am also thinking of my Pelikan M205 'F'.
And maybe also a couple of my modern Parkers that have 'M' nibs.

:)

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
