Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Caran d'Ache Electric Orange

This is review #309 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This ink was from a cartridge gifted to me by a generous FPNer. I added a couple drops of distilled water to make up for evaporation. I don't believe it was enough to significantly alter the ink's properties for review.

The scanner destroyed the scan of the swatch. Even my correction is very wrong.  See the review by @lgsoltek on FPN for more accurate colors, also, the Anderson Pens swatch, and this image from an Amazon listing.

Cleaning was quick and easy.

Zoomed in photo (Not quite right, but I don't know how to describe the difference.)

Screenshot (This is probably the closest to reality, but still not quite right.)

Scan of Completed Review (Scanner makes this ink pinkish red. Corrected as best I could. Not too far off.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Neither is quite right, but not horrible.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 291µm. With 309 inks measured, the average line width is 297µm.)

Microscope image (400x. I saw orange, pink, and yellow dyes.)

Microscope image (100x. There were many interesting areas of the slide.)

Great bright review on this beautiful fall day @LizEF

The story line is so somber and solemn.  I heard a funeral march while reading the text. I'm hoping it's for the final phase of QuinPa's recovery 😊🙏

The ink as I recall was very bright and too cost prohibitive to buy as bottles. There are too many great oranges cheaper in price to warrant this price.

Thanks for bring Essri and Makhabesh back to the foray. They balance Quin's dire predicament. And make this Tuesday brighter than usual 🙏

Yeah, Caran d'Ache inks are expensive - even with the nifty-looking bottle.  This one isn't that unique and from this fine a nib, not so electric...  (Maybe I should mix Electric Orange and Shocking Blue and see if they give me Electrocution Brown (if I were really lucky, it would lean ever so slightly green)...)  (We'll never know, that tiny cartridge is long gone.)

Happy to do it!  :) Essri will be our POV character next week, then I alternate between them (Quin > Makhabesh > Essri).

Yes, but but, But what color is the mold covering Quin's father?  Because that micro… yikes.

Makhabesh, Essri, stay focused!

I'm an orange ink lover, the more eye-searing the better, and they are normally hard to clean.  So the ease of cleaning is a plus for CDA. I have a hoarded sample of the Sailor Kin etc, MB Lucky, and a really electric one from Chesterfield that alas, had to be ditched due to something that looked a lot like the micro.

You make Tuesdays magical and fun... and squeaky!  I always look forward to the review and story.  @LizEF, thanks so much.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I was thinking the same thing!

It’s a good thing that I didn’t have to pay for my seat, because I’m only using the edge, Liz. Thanks for the gripping story!

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, FWP Edwards Gardens

MontBlanc 310s F, mystery grey ink left in converter

Pelikan M300 green striped CIF, Colorverse Moonlit Veil

WOW!, the microscopy image is where all the electricity went! ;)

Thank you, @LizEF, for enlighting my Wed... Tuesday afternoon and for encouraging me to post my comment only minutes before leaving the office!

I will hurry up.

The situation with Quins father reminds me more about what I read in the - hmm, second or third? - book of Dune from Frank Herbert, when the later God-Emperor covered himself with the sand trouts. Is the mold-like "thing" really only harmful? 🤫 May there be a leftover after removal - something like a unique ability? 😲

As @yazeh already mentioned, even loving orange like @Sailor Kenshin, there are too many really good ones on the market, my ink drawer is still full and I didn't manage to buy a new, a bigger one. 🤷‍♀️ Sorry Caran d'Ache. 😶

Looking forward to next Wednesday!

One life!

Sorry to hear about the Chesterfield infestation. ;) I like Akkerman Oranje Boven better than this one (and it would have a cooler bottle).  But mostly I prefer burnt oranges. :)

@LizEF Not an orange ink person by any stretch of the imagination.  But thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.

Hmm.  Hadn't considered that.  It seems unlikely, though, given that Marsell's whole intent was to make Quin suffer. However....(nope, you'll have to read and find out! ;) :P )

Thank you for another usefully-informative review

It has let me know that this is another orange ink that does not appeal to me as much as does the only orange ink that I have yet bought.

Which was an ink that I had thought could be classed as 'expensive'.

So, this review is doubly useful to me, because seeing the price of Caran d'Ache inks has made me feel much less bad about the amount of money that I paid for my Edelsteins :D

:) Hmm.  One wonders what other orange that is...  Sailor or Akkerman, probably - they have good inks and are on the more expensive side.

Aaaah.  Glad to have helped you feel better about your purchase! :D  Am happy for my review to be useful in whatever fashion one needs.

Sorry, but no.

It is...

...Pelikan Edelstein Mandarin.
Which is very possibly a lot less 'fun' if dispensed from pens that weren't made by Pelikan.

That photo is not great. If viewed in decent light (or photographed competently), the stuff does indeed look nice and juicy, like a 'Mandarin' orange

That is gorgeous.  Very nice shading! :)

Well, you can hardly blame them for that... ;) I do have a Pelikan, though it didn't come dripping wet as advertised.  Some flossing fixed that.

It's good enough to show off that shading and a nice shade of orange. :)

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
