Noodler's 1984 - Regular lineup

Noodler’s 1984

This is the regular lineup 1984 and not one of the special edition inks.

It’s a fast drying, cellulose loving ink. It absolutely hates Tomoe River 68 gr paper. It does a lot of unmentionable things to it and any cheap/thin papers.

What I noticed was that if the feed is primed the ink will bleed through anything, however, if you un-prime the feed, and let it settle it works fine. ;)

Noodler’s has many bulletproof purples, which are better behaved than this one, such as Tchaikovsky or even Polar Purple to name a few. But then again, if you’re a fan of Orwell, 1984, you can rein this misbehaving ink. Either with Rhodia, Midori or Maruman, or a thick absorbent paper and a fine nib. Using a gusher is foolhardy :D

What I noticed over the week or so using this ink, that every time, I reached a pen with this ink, I enjoyed writing with it, thanks to its excellent lubrication.

Let's start with the chroma:

I didn't bother posting Hammermill. You can see how it affects this paper:

Watertest:

The nib of the Kakuno Ef was primed. Not a good idea. As you can see how it spread. But afterwards it was alright....

and finally an artwork. Mushroom, I did a wash with this ink, and here you can see the complexity of the ink shining:

Paper is a Talens Mixed media paper

Other inks are Noodler's Polar Brown / De Atramentis Document Red.

· Pens used: Pilot Kakuno (Ef, Stub( , Kaweco Sport (EF/F/M/B), Kanwrite with Ahab nib

· What I liked: Fast drying time, muted purple, perfect for a lefty overwrite, chroma, doing ink washes and the pleasant writing experience.

· What I did not like: It’s a finicky (read high maintenance) ink. It doesn’t like certain papers at all. I prefer other purples.

· What some might not like: Feathering, woolly line and the above.

· Shading: Are you kidding me?

· Ghosting: Yes, on Tomoe River 68gr

· Bleed through: Yes, on Tomoe River 68gr with some wet pen configuration

· Flow Rate: Wet

· Lubrication: Excellent.

· Nib Dry-out: Didn’t notice.

· Start-up: Didn’t notice.

· Saturation: Yes.

· Shading Potential: Are you kidding me again?

· Sheen: Nope.

· Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Yes, on some papers, especially if the feed is primed, i.e. when you fill up your pen.

· Nib Creep / “Crud”: A bit

· Staining (pen): Surprisingly no.

· Clogging: No.

· Cleaning: I put it in the middle to high maintenance category, ike most purple inks. I let it soak in solution.

· Water resistance: Excellent. Nothing budges.

· Availability: 3 oz, 90 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Thanks, @yazeh!  Great review.  I like the color on the swatch, but not so much on Midori (amazing how much paper color can impact the ink color).  Love Mr. Mouse hiding on Kitty's nose. :D   (Cat probably can't see him that close.)  And looking closer at the sky in your mushroom portrait now, and it's gorgeous - this ink is a good one for washes. :)  Thanks for enduring the ink's finicky behavior so we don't have to (unless we really want to ;) ).

@yazeh, I like the chroma, and the beautiful way this ink washes out in your painting.  The general ink color is pretty, or would look pretty among some greens.

And of course the team of Mousie and Kitteh.  But o my, the feathering!  Eep.

Thanks once again for your review.  I look forward to these!  And although 1984 was probably named for the book, now I can't get that David Bowie song out of my head.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Doesn't it?

Yep as I said, my pens were primed. Afterwards the feathering was minimal :)

Most welcome. That must be better than the movie :)

Ironically, the worst behaving Noodler's purple ink I ever encountered was La Reine Mauve.  It was certainly aptly named, as far as the color went.  But I started referring to it as "nib creep, section creep, how the [bleep] did I get this on the BACK of my hand creep...."

As for 1984, I finally broke down a while back and picked up a bottle of version 2 of it (I'd held off for the longest time, because the artwork on the label just creeped me out [no pun intended]).

Interesting. I'll be looking forward to reviewing that one :D

Honestly, I couldn't remember....  Looked it up just now in my inventory notes, and had a (?) in the table of inks tested vs. not, so clearly it wasn't an "OMG yes" OR an "OMG, who can I palm this off on?" either way....  And apparently never got around to doing a full test/review of it either (sigh, I have way too many inks in that category).

I get you. I have way too many samples. I have found a way to use a lot of unwanted inks, by using them in brush pens...they use copious amount of ink :)

I have a few cheapie Kuretake brush pens (I think they were packaged in the boxes of the 4 ounce bottles Noodler's Kung Te Cheng as freebies, along with Platinum Preppies -- this would be before the Noodler's Charlie pens came out).  But I use them as highlighter pens, with some of the Noodler's highlighter ink colors.

I use an ungainly Pentel Brush pen to utilize the Diamine Sepia and mix it with a bit of Pearl noire. It has a weird filling system. I'm planning to use a Kuretake which uses Platinum cartridges to fill with a host of semi-full abandoned bottles :)
