Thank you for taking the time to  put together this post, @zeroduke! I appreciate it.

The nib on the Mk I is extremely attractive. The semi keyhole vent reminds me of an Esterbrook dip nib. I prefer the two thin cap rings, but I like that the branding is less conspicuous on the Mk III.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, FWP Edwards Gardens

Pelikan M300 green striped CIF, Colorverse Moonlit Veil

Pelikan M400 Blue striped OM, Troublemaker Abalone

Pelikan M800 Needlepoint, Colorverse Kilonova

Sheaffer Fashion II 284, Sheaffer Turquoise

In my experience, top of the cap for the most recent Experts is black plastic, not that metal disc you show in your photo.

I haven't tried the Mk I nib. Is it in any way better than the others?

My MkIII is exactly the same as the MKIII in these pics...except for the finial. As you note, mine is a black plastic with a "W" embossed on it, similar to the MkI in these pics.

@zeroduke You sure all of your finial pics are labelled correctly?

I have an Expert 3 in dark red. It is a gorgeous pen.

Very nice colour, indeed.

You have to see it in person to appreciate it. But that is true about many pens.

Thanks for the post. I was just wondering this very question.

What's the feedback like on the V3 nib? And was it perfect right outta the box? Recently saw an interesting video where someone had issues with the V3 nibs QC.

That's the finial on mine as well, and is the finial shown on the Waterman site: https://www.waterman.com/expert-pens.html.

This link gives a few glimpses of the finials, but the pens are not listed as I, II, or III. I presume that we can assume that these are all III's, but neither of the links posted here over the last week really settle this question (about the identification from the look of the finial).

I know there is supposed to be a significant difference in weight between the I and the II (plastic vs. brass?), but can anyone speak to other differences between the pens (and including differences with III, too)?  The quality of the nibs, the balance of the pens, the diameter of the grips, reliability as a pen, etc?

My very first fountain pen was a Waterman Expert II decades ago. I loved the pen then, and it is still one of my favorites.  Excellent nib, nice heft, fits perfectly in my hand, and it is still writing well after all these years. I eventually ended up with four of them, so that should tell you something.

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

      >Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color,<   I'm sure they were, and my answer assumes that. It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
