A bit of fun... 'You have 30 seconds to decide. You can only ever have one fountain pen. Which is it to be?'

Of my own pens? Pelikan 140 OM nib, light green stripe binde. It hasn't let me down since my grandfather gave it to me in about 1969, and I don't imagine it ever will.

If I could choose anything, a turquoise Soennecken 111 (any size) with an OBB nib. In my dreams.....

No, it doesn't have to be your own pen. You are more than welcome to your turquoise Soennecken 111 in any size you'd prefer.

You guys are keeping me busy, when I see a pen I have no experience of mentioned, I just have to look it up! 🙂

Sorry, I meant to attach this link. Not sure if you have seen it already. It looks like you have a kindred spirit.

I have the Black one - it is a special pen but hard to justify the price.

Yes, I know that feeling.... It's best not to go down that route in my experience. The pen obviously gives you a lot of pleasure. You can't put a price on that.

Did they do two Vermillion colours? I've seen one that looks a dark red, and one that looks almost orange...🤔

Black always looks 'classy' in an expensive pen. IMO.

I'm not trying to be controversial @mizgeorge, but I've always thought the clip on the Soennecken 111 looks bent - or maybe 'wavy' would be better!

My Grandmother's Parker 51.  I use it regularly.

"Hey, Cameron. You realize if we played by the rules right now we'd be in gym?"

I've been on here over a decade and STILL do that!  Because the amount of collected knowledge is just staggering.

And the generosity of people sharing that knowledge is humbling....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
