Hey All,

There's a new show in town, and registration is now open!

The Pacific Northwest Pen Show is kicking off in Portland Oregon July 8-9, 2023.  https://PNWPenShow.com

The Pen Round-Up (that had been hosted by PDX Pen) didn't survive the demise of the antiques show that it had coincided with (and of course, the pandemic) so we local folks are super excited that a local company (led by a huge fountain pen fan / collector) has stepped up to organize a new Pen show.  Wow!!!

It'll be hosted at the Embassy Suites by Hilton, 319 SW Pine St, Portland, Oregon.

(I'm not an organizer, just a cheerleader who would love to get the word out!  Pass it on!)

Martha

Congratulations on having a pen show of your own, and downtown too! Not stuck out at the airport or something. I hope it is mega successful.

I'm excited about having a show not too far from home. Hoping it's a successful show and becomes a 'regular' on the pen circuit.

Aloha from Silverdale WA! Mahalo, thanks for the announcement!  I'm putting it on my 'would Love to Go' calendar, and will see if I can make it.

Nobody else from FPN seems to have been at the PNW Show in Portland, so here are a few pics. There were about 20 exhibitors, and these are just a random subset.

Shawn Newton from Newton Pens:

Nik Pang (nik@entropy.ink) with the largest offering of vintage pens at the show:

Laban with with a variety of pens in resin, metal and ebonite:

Taccia pens in urushi, maki-e and radenL

By exercising iron self-control I came away with only some Taccia ink (Ukiyo-e Hiroshige Ruri), a slim full-length Shaeffer Balance in Ebonized Pearl, and a Midori notebook. My wife got a Midori notebook and a Taccia ballpoint and pen sleeve.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
