Hello FPN!

Good day from Pittsburgh!

I'm happy to have found this community.

As my "about me" states, I just got my first real fountain pen and I'm hooked.

I started out with a cheap calligraphy pen. Mistakenly believing this to be fountain pen life, I quickly gave it up. But everyone on r/fountainpens can't be wrong, so I dug in to more research. I have several pens in my Goulet cart now and twice as many inks. Send help.

For my recent birthday, my wonderful in-laws bought me my ideal starter pen - a Lamy Safari in Candy Mango with all the cartridges I could use in a lifetime. I haven't put it down in days.

I've already planned my next pen: a TWSBI 580 in smoke and rose gold. And since my gateway pen was free, I feel even more justified in spending real money on an entry-level pen.

Anyway, I hope to collect insight from yinz & you all in general as I continue to let this hobby ruin me financially. 😄

Take care, all.

Welcome to the addiction—er, hobby! My second fountain pen was also a TWSBI (Eco), and it’s still one of my daily writers. You’ll love it.

I also had a similar experience with my in-laws. My mother-in-law, when she saw me writing with my brass Kaweco Sport, disappeared to the other room and came back with a mint condition, vintage Parker 51 that she had rescued from her father’s dresser drawer before he sold his house and moved to a retirement home. It had never even been inked up, but it writes like a dream.

That's amazing! I love coming across stories like that.

I can't wait to get my hands on the 580. I just bought a ton of ink in preparation. Now to convince my partner to let me hit the "checkout" button.

Hello B&B,

:W2FPN:

If you want me to send help; the only help available involves men in white coats with straight jackets or bankruptcy attorneys... so, be careful what you ask for in this place. :D

I see you're from Pittsburgh... that's great! If you ever find yourself lost in Southeastern Ohio... Belmont County... St. Clairsville, to be exact... Lmk. I'll make sure they fire up the traffic light for you. :D

Seriously, it's a great small town.

The best advice I can give you is clear your cart at Goulet and take small, careful steps.  Right now, you're very likely to spend a boat load of money on pens and inks that will end up collecting dust in 6 months.

Oh, I know. You researched them very carefully and their the best pens in existence... so were mine. ;)

God bless and welcome. Sean :)

(Belated) Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

Not sure I missed this thread before now, but there is a local pen club -- Steel City Nibs.  Normally meetings are the second Thursday of the month, but this month it got pushed back a week because a few of us were at the Baltimore-Washington Pen Show.
In the past, we have had meetings at the Panera Bread in Bakery Square.  This most recent one was in the upstairs/reserved section of The Gallery (also in Bakery Square -- which had plusses and minuses, IMO).  I'll try to PM you when Josh (who runs the mailing list) sends out Information for next month.

Thanks so much, Ruth! I'm on here sparingly, but I will look out for your direct message. I'd love to get in touch with Steel City Nibs & finally meet some kindred spirits in stationary.

Hey, Sean!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm loving playing with all my inks and pens. (I have 5 pens now – all inked!)

I'm looking for paper suggestions now: thinking of picking up some rhodia if the consensus suggests it.

Let me know your thoughts!

Oh, tell me about it. I'm a stationary nut from way back. My collection is formidable & growing at an alarming rate!

Now that my eyes have been opened to this community, I'm afraid I'm totally sucked in!
