Hydraulic feel to the twist motion of a Coventry I

I've just joined this forum, so Hi all!

I have been bought a Cross Townsend Matte Green Knurlled Ballpoint (my choice :) )

I wanted to buy a cross pen because I was given a Cross Coventry (not Coventry II) ball point in a glossy red lacqure from a supplier at an exhibition. It has a really nice, quality feel to it. A part of that was down to the feel of how you twisted the cap to reveal the nib. It has a silent resistance to it, almost like it's hydraulic. I wanted to get a potentially nicer one (paid more at least!) but without the company's logo etched into the side.

I was disapointed when I opened the package this morning to find that not only did the Townsend that I received not have that silent resistnce to the twist motion, but here was also a bit of a scraping sound as I twisted it. Bearing in mind that this Townsend is priced four time higher than the Coventry, I did expect more.

I spoke to the UK supplier  (I am based in the UK) and they asked me to use it for a couple of weeks to see if it "beds in". I'm not going to. I feel that a qulaity pen should not need "bedding in"!

Looking at the twist mechanism, it looks as if the design has changed. It seems like the Coventry's twist mechanism is loaded with grease which gives it that lovely feel, where as the new Townsend has a distinct absense of grease. Maybe this is a design change to aid logevity and maintenance, as I've read on other pages that this mechanism can sieze up if not used regularly.

Does anyone know which current, sub £150 Cross pens have this nice twist mechanism?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
