I love this colour as far as red writing inks go. Plenty of shading on Exacompta FAF 70g/m² paper; it's more pronounced, to my eyes looking at the actual review sheet, than the scan suggests for the writing done with the EF nib. No show-through, and no to minimal bleed-through. Drying times are long, though; with the EF-nibbed Platinum President, which isn't particularly dry-writing judging by the colour intensity, a wet dot on top of a minuscule ‘i’ or ’j’ would take a full 20 seconds on a good day to dry. Considering that the Exacompta FAF paper is more absorbent than Rhodia 80g/m², I'd imagine a page of this writing could get quite smudgy if a wetter or less fine nib is used. There is some mild water resistance; if you mop up an accidental spill on the page in under 90 seconds, you'll probably have no problem salvaging the text and keep it still legible. However, if left soaking for more than 15 minutes, the ink would get released from the paper fibres leaving not much to be read. (I have a test page that was left soaking for 24 hours, and there was nothing left of the ink marks.)

Nice review! I especially liked your more detailed elaboration on drying time. Nice colour -- and although I do like "cherry" it reminds me more of blood, which I also cherish....

I forgot to add the remark that, strangely, changing the speed of my writing (à la the brown foxes), which should alter the wetness of the ink marks being put down on the page, did not vary the degree of shading all that much. The writing in Chinese hanzi that I did with the Jinhao X159 has shown that the ink ‘dots’ produced by dipping movements, or pauses, of my pen can be much wetter and darker. I find that really confusing, and don't quite know what to make of the ‘wetness’ of either the ink or that pen.

Thanks for the review, ASD!  I like these bright reds, and one that shades is a plus for me. :)  Don't like slow dry times, but then, I use blotter paper as bookmarks, so it's not a deal-stopper.  May have to sample this one - in a couple years...

Y'all are too kind. My ink ‘reviews’ really aren't worth perusing; and I only did this one — after a long break — because I wanted to test the new Jinhao X159 (blergh!); that is why this isn't in my usual ‘lazy review’ format.

Hmm.  Well, it tells me what I want to know, which mostly amounts to:

  • How does it look (including shading)?
  • How does it behave? (I assume if it had behaved badly in the pen, you would have said something about it not flowing or feeling scratchy, or something - the absence of such comments tells me it behaves reasonably well.)

So, good review! :D

The color reminds me of the exclusive Voltaire Candide Vermillion (Noodler's) ink that was once available through FPN.

I really like this color and the overall look. My only concern personally would be that I don't know that this color would match up well with the more muted blacks and blues that I'm using; I would fear this ink overpowering those inks on the page. Otherwise, so nice, and I could imagine this would be really nice out of a good calligraphy nib.

Thank you @A Smug Dillfor this review! It doesn't feel lazy as it has all the elements of a review to introduce the most important properties of a fountain pen ink.

From what I see on the screen, I love this colour and set it on my "accumulate ideas and make a purchase when the list is long enough" shopping list. 😄

One life!

From what I see on the screen, I guess a good fit with either Waterman Mysterious Blue or even Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Not so easy to match may be R&K Isatis tinctoria (the appearance depends so much on pen and paper) and worth a try may be deAtramentis Deepwater Black-Blue (may be either a close match or a close miss).

One life!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
