the first link doesn't work anymore. it won't add to cart. I have 2 other orders from a month ago and none of those pens have shipped either.

Izumos come with the President nib.  Personally, I think it is a pretty nib, rather small for this large pen though.

I like the look of the Platinum President nib better than that of the #3776 nib (of the past decade); and I personally don't have a fetish for proportionally large nibs on fountain pens just to visually signal that they are fountain pens and not any other type of writing instrument. The President nib is not as small as, say, a Pilot Custom size no.5 nib; and, in my experience, physically smaller nibs tend to produce more precise writing outcomes for a given width grade, although finer width grades of nibs from Sailor and Pilot do not seem as prone to becoming more undisciplined, so at a guess Platinum could have (unnecessarily) made physically larger nibs as well. Given the taper of the gripping section on the Izumo, I think the size of the President nib is about right, lest it turns the profile of the business end of the pen into an hourglass figure, with a squeeze waist where the nib joins the gripping section.

But this "unpretty" nib.

I don't find the chevrons, inscriptions, or absence of curly scrollwork on the President nib aesthetically displeasing. Assuming you aren't talking about the physical nib size, and can't have a larger nib, what is it that you would have preferred to see stamped on the nib of the Izumo to make it “pretty” in your eyes?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

At least, "出雲", as with the Bamboo Izumo. Even nothing would be prettier.

"President" is the simple charme of the 1950s when Opel cars were named Admiral, Kapitän, Kadett.

And looking at some presidents, that name is tainted, a "no thank you" for me.

Nothing said about the pen and the writing of that nib

These are incredible pens and usually go for double the price.  Certainly worthwhile, if you have the funds.

I ordered a far less expensive pen from Amazon UK to the US. The package arrived opened and the pen was not protected. It's pure luck it did not simply fall out of the shipping envelope (yes, envelope).

Not to be a downer, but remember it's still just Amazon shipping these products. Needless to say they don't care about fountain pens at all and their insouciant packaging habits reflect this. I'd say ordering these represents a bit of a gamble. (Yes, you'd likely be refunded if there's a mishap ...)

Well, my order for the Izumo says "Not yet shipped" though it's been almost a week since I ordered.

Just received a Platinum 3776 from Amazon in an envelope, but in its original box, which was more than enough to protect it. It also arrived four days early from its estimated arrival date.

I'm glad, @sketchstack, that your pen arrived in good shape!

Likewise, I'm glad your experience was positive. Frankly I just wish they'd use a nice sturdy box when shipping internationally. Of course with the Izumo specifically they may be forced to as I believe those are presented in wooden boxes.

I checked in with Amazon and they told me there were errors with the orders I placed a month ago and they don't know what the error or why, just that their system shows the order with an error status. They told me to cancel the order and re-order it. Which I did. Don't know if it still works.

Well, my Izumo order says item "still not shipped," which I hope means it will eventually arrive.  And I ordered the pen a week ago...

The seller says usually ships in 4 to 6 weeks.   I ordered mine on June 20.   The pen still has not shipped.

Sketchstack-

I have often found the packaging for items sold through Amazon.com by the various Amazon Global stores to be non-standard, and sometimes non-existent.

On the other hand, all fountain pens I have purchased from the seller Amazon Japan through Amazon.com have been of the highest standard.  And I have purchased over a dozen Japanese fountain pens from them.  For example, I have purchased three Platinum Procyons from three different sellers, and only the one from Amazon Japan arrived in a nice box.

How does one do that with the same price?  Should I wait?  Please advise.

Thanks -

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
