bleed through Mont Blanc 149

I am looking for a nice ink that will not bleed through. I have a Montblanc 149 calligraphy and I’ve tried Mont blanc and diamine ink. This pen writes wet. any recommendations would be appreciated

What colour are you looking for?

What paper do you use?

Did your Montblanc/ Diamine Inks bleed through?

Normally IG inks don't bleed through. Essri or Diamine Registrars (both are dry inks) are good candidates.

I don't know those papers so, I cannot comment.

What is the ink you're using above.

Normal fountain pen friendly paper, should not be affected. Have you tried on good Japanese paper (Apica/ Midori etc) or European paper (like Rhodia)?

Often times when bleed-through happens is because:

1) Paper is absorbent (Field notes paper / or cheep paper) or is thin.

2) Ink is cellulose reactive (Noodler's bulletproof inks) or highly saturated.

3) Pen is applied with a lot of pressure. If you're heavy handed, this could be a cause.

4) Pen/ ink/ nib combo wet.  This is difficult to explain. For ex. Noodler's Baystate Blue bleeds through with a #6 medium nib. However, it doesn't with Fine #2 or wide Italic nib.

Try drier inks. I use 4 Stipula (Dark Blue, Musk Green, Fading Grey and Saffron) in wet-writing Souverans with good results. Ditto with Light Blue in an M205.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

That looks like pretty absorbent paper. Most likely the paper is the "weak link" here in terms of putting more restrictions on your ink choice. I'd recommend looking at the following papers:

  • Exaclair group (Rhodia, Clairefontaine, G. Lalo, Exacompta, Quo Vadis, etc.)
  • Fabriano (Lamy notebooks included, I think)
  • Southworth heavy cotton papers
  • Japanese papers (Apica, Midori MD, Kokuyo, Tsubame, Masuya, LIFE, Maruman, etc.)
  • Walmart Pen + Gear paper from Vietnam (surprisingly decent)

Given that the 149 you have is wet (especially if you apply pressure), here are some drier inks that might help tame it:

  • Platinum inks in general, but especially the dye-based or iron-gall inks (Classic, Blue Black, Mix Free, dyestuff Black/Red)
  • Standard Waterman colors (Black, Red, Blue, and maybe their Blue Black)
  • Pelikan 4001 inks
  • Lamy standard inks

Unfortunately, inks and paper react individually with one another, so while in general the above are good choices, you'll want to play with which ones work best for you under your conditions. Humidity, storage conditions, and so forth, can also play a part in how the inks interact with paper.

I pulled out the 3 MB 149s that I own and wrote on four different types of paper to send you a CRV (co-razy-view) letter.  YOu can write on  the other half of the paper and try out your pen and ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Oh, and when I played with the Calligraphy pen that belongs to @Frank C, we tested multiple MB149s. See the thread here:

I believe that @fpupulin tested many inks in his MB Calligraphy pen and highly recommends Montblanc Permanent Blue.  Hopefully, he will chime in.

To the OP. I was watching at the photograph of your written sheet and, unless it is a very porous/absorbent paper, I have the impression that the nib of your 149 Calligraphy is not writing the extra-fine strokes it should be able to.

I have not so much experience with "smooth" papers, as I do not like them too much. I prefer the paper with some "teeth" that interacts with the nib. I mostly use vergata (laid) paper, and I would suggestion to give a try to the Fabriano Artist journals. They are not 100% cheap, but they aren't expensive neither, and they may be used for daily writing and for calligraphic exercises, depending on the size.

As to the ink. As amberleadavis said, my ink of choice for not bleeding through any kind of paper is Montblanc Blue Permanent. Black Permanent has the same property as to see through, but it takes much longer to dry. With both these inks you should have the precaution to carefully clan your pen at any new load, even though you are not changing ink. I flush the pen twenty times before loading it again. No problems of clogging and no shadows on the ink window.

@Stix posted the same question in two different topics. There are multiple answers in both threads. I gave up trying to help.

"One can not waste time worrying about small minds . . . If we were normal, we'd still be using free ball point pens." —Bo Bo Olson

"I already own more ink than a rational person can use in a lifetime." —Waski_the_Squirrel

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
