CROSS TOWNSEND COLORS

Recommended Posts

Hi all.  I know there have been posts about Townsend colors on here before, and I have looked at them to help me in my collecting. But I am stuck and need some help.

I have three questions: 1. is there a difference between Townsend Silver Lacquer and Quicksilver I have included a photo of each from an Ebay merchant who had both colors lister- -- - 2. Is there a difference between  Townsend Grey Lacquer and Titanium?  I have attached a photo of my Titanium Townsends and my Quicksilver (I think?)

And #3.  how about the greens for the Townsends? Below is what I have for available green Townsend models - confusing to say the least.  I think I added a green pen today that I didn't have, but its always a gamble.

Thanks in advance for your help.  Mark

I found some information that is helpful but doesn't really answer my questions.

This is from a FPN post by Townsend expert MrThoth

Sure, I can do that. ;) If I weren't such a lazy (bleep) I'd already have a website up that I could point you to, but instead you'll have to settle for this plain ol' list for now. ;) This list is current through October 2018, and includes as its latest releases the 2019 Year of the Pig pen and the three Scuderia Ferrari pens. I own all of these pens except for the AT0047-22 Townsend Tango and one mentioned at the end of the list. The hunt continues, but with little luck these days.

Well I don't have all of those but I have quite a few of them.  A rough count shows I have 54 of the 65 that I know a SKU number. It should be noted that I count any type pen as meeting the requirement: ball point, rollerball, or fountain pen.

I have also run into an issue of not knowing what the pen I am looking for looks like.  For example, I am not sure what some of these colors are:

  1. 626-3 — Cosmos Black - NO idea what this is - could be a matte color black, if so I have it
  2. AT0046-30 — Black Smooth Touch .  - it might be the rubberized surface on a townsend that i have
  3. AT0047-22 — Townsend Tango -  there are other Tango's but none that I have listed as just Townsend Tango
  4. 556 — Tuxedo (I think I know what a tux is black or another color on the bottom & silver or gold on top but I don't know what it is on its own)
  5. 566 — Duet Black - NO idea what this is - I have googled this several times and it does show anything specific
These are the models I don't have:
AT0046-30 — Black Smooth Touch
AT0046-43 — Stylus Brushed Platinum Plate
AT00??-?? — 2022 Year of the Tiger
AT0046B-32 — 20th Anniversary 23K Heavy Gold Plate (aka Brushed Gold Plate)
AT0046CB-38 — Japanese Cherry Blossom Brushed Platinum Plate (I understand only 40 in the world made, might not get this one, and I can live with that)
AT0047-22 — Townsend Tango
556 — Tuxedo
566 — Duet Black Gold
626-3 — Cosmos Black
696-6 — Malachite Lacquer
776 — 18K Gold Filled

If any one has one of these and wants to trade or sell, I would be interested.  Thanks Mark

I see you are willing to count non-FPs to complete your collection.  In that sense, I understand that the 2022 Year of the Tiger pen does not have a fountain pen version, alas.

The Cosmos Black is a simple matte black.  Chrome clip, ends and cap bands.  Mine is marked USA - hard to read but stamped in the usual place - opposite side of clip, just above band.   Stainless steel nib.  Pre-pandemic, I picked mine up off eBay for quite cheap.

Thanks for the info, that is what I thought too.  But in looking at my boxes, I have one that is label Cosmo Black, and one that is labelled Matt - see photos.  Both have different stock numbers too.

AT00??-?? — 2022 Year of the Tiger

While I included this in the 2018 list that you resposted here, I did it in anticipation of such a pen being produced, since Cross has produced an Asian Zodiac pen every year for a decade now. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, Cross only produced the Year of the Tiger pen as a rollerball, and never produced any 2023 Year of the Rabbit pens at all.

The Tiger pen situation baffles me, since the rollerball section and nib section for a Townsend are identical in terms of how they screw into the barrel of the pen. All they had to do to market a Year of the Tiger FP was switch out the two sections, and in the process make a lot more money per pen. But perhaps they were running out of nib sections.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
