@Tom Kellie, thanks for posting these. I have more ideas for inks for the Italic Edge. You might have more ink than @amberleadavis 😃

I've just spent a very pleasant time going through this thread and viewing the lovely writing samples (huge thanks to all those who've contributed to these, especially @Tom Kellie, but I'm not quite understanding what the constant updating of the 'list' is for (it also makes it difficult to scroll through, certainly on my desktop). Could the it not be simply posted once and updated from time to time by a moderator?

I don't have the energy to go through and cross reference, but I'd very interested to know if there were any inks which didn't behave well with this gorgeous looking nib?

That's a nice selection and I like the pen holder. What ink do you have in them?

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

For my part, I am very grateful for the constant updates.  I copy and paste each update into the personal file I have for this terrific fountain pen.  Thanks @NoType!!

I don't have the energy to go through and cross reference, but I'd very interested to know if there were any inks which didn't behave well with this gorgeous looking nib?

For most of us, @NoType is doing us a service by refreshing his list every time that new images are posted. I recall that all or almost all of these inks worked well enough in the Italic Edge. The difference is that some looked better, shaded better, or were more appealing than others. I use this topic as reference for inks I might choose for the Italic Edge.

I hope he will correct me if I am wrong, but as I recall, sometime ago @Tom Kelliesaid he was not willing to post any of the negative findings or make any negative comments about the inks he has tested.

For sure, by now, there are more than enough choices for which there are strongly positive findings and comments!

Sure, and I understand that many people would find it useful not to have to look again at the actual samples an make their own judgements as to how appealing an individual ink might be, but four times in a single page? (page 8 for example) As I say, could it not simply be consolidated by a mod? Perhaps one who's already involved in the thread?

And that is Tom's prerogative. However, I'm sure even you will agree that your personal file would benefit just as much from knowing what doesn't work as what does.

Yes, "even I" would agree with this..........

But I very much disagree with your desire to have @NoType cease providing us with his useful updates.  If you don't like them, simply scroll past them........

As for inks that didn't work, while it's obviously dealer's choice, @bunnspecial demonstrated that some inks might push the pen too far into the wetness extremes if you want to enjoy line variation and shading from the ink. Diamine Majestic Blue seems a great candidate, but I'd also throw Jacques Herbin Bleu de Minuit as an ink that is likely so wet as to potentially overwhelm the desirable qualities that many might seek in the pen.

On the other hand, if you're using this like a signing pen on good paper and want to sling ink like you're bathing an elephant, then those two inks might really make things pop. Watching a millimeter thick pool of rich, blue ink sitting on top of the page in the shape of your signature can be quite the experience.

Affirmed, regarding wet inks.  On the other hand it is marvelous with inks often thought to be dry.  What it does for paler blues I found truly amazing.

Thank you.

The Italic Edge has MB Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the 149C has MB Royal Blue, and the 146C has Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
