Does  the nib feel different than the normal 149 nib? Ie., more bounce or flex? Is this just a 149 with an italic grind?

I have had 149s from every decade of production and currently have most of them covered from the 1950s on up to present.

I say that because there is no consistent feel across different ages of 149 nibs.

With that said, I find it a bit more bouncy than most current standard production nibs. It's not dramatic, and nothing like 1950s or 60s nibs, but it's there at least in my example.

Thanks to @NoType and @Tom Kellie for keeping us up to date on what works with the Italic Edge. I appreciate the efforts you are making.

~ @Frank C and @NoType:

Your support and encouragement has meant a lot over the past several months. Thank you both very much.

The outstanding design and workmanship of Italic Edge speaks to Montblanc's high standards and the creative vision of @Fritz Schimpf.

Fountain Pen Network is richly blessed with long-time active members with both professional understanding of inks and widely varied ink collections.

I'm not among their number. Nevertheless, I do have a layman's appreciation for the beauty of ink on fine paper.

The Italic Edge ink project has been an education through action. Each week's ink selection has revealed hitherto unappreciated subtleties.

As a direct consequence of more or less following the same format for each ink tested, using the same nib, trends and characteristics have emerged.

Most of what has been learned was long ago apparent to those with more experience and know-how. Yet for me, it's been an ongoing revelation.

Certain ink brands are more cherished now than before, their positive attributes having become clearer through repeated testing.

There remain as yet untested inks on my ink shelves, therefore if at all possible, for a few more weeks ink tests will be posted.

When this project runs its course, I'll have a fresh outlook on the inks on-hand in my home office. The experience of testing inks in Italic Edge has honed my understanding.

There is no favorite among the inks tested. Each has its own desirable qualities. As it happens my go-to ink for work tasks hasn't yet been tested.

Elsewhere in FPN are highly disciplined, refined, careful reviews and comparisons of contemporary inks. They're a precious resource for those seeking ideal inks for their fountain pens.

This thread is nothing more than an extended comparison of quality inks written with a nib of admirable quality, Italic Edge.

@Tom KellieYou are an inspiration and a treasure to the Fountain Pen Network, and I, along with countless others, look forward to the coming weeks of this thread with bated breath.  It is a privilege for all of us here to peer over your shoulder, so to speak, during this inspired project, learning alongside you.  Thank you for your patience, passion, diligence, and most of all, your joy.

My pen arrived a little while ago! I've been lurking here for quite awhile and finally bought this beautiful pen. It feels amazing in the hand (I have small hands and I was worried it might feel too big) and I love the way the nib seems to glide across the page. Not the best of pictures but my cat kept trying to help, so I had to move fast. Thank you Tom Kellie and everyone for your great posts. It's been a lot of fun to lurk in here and see all the inks in action.

I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying your pen. They are unique. Of course, we expect more photos, writing samples, and ink reviews.

I want to ink up and play with it this weekend when I can close the office door and just relax and play. I did dip it into MB Brother's Grimm (a friend in another group told me to look here to see how that ink looked) and it writes beautifully.

I tried Montblanc Season’s Greetings in my pen. Tbh I hated the scent of this ink and will be dumping the remainder of it from the pen.
there is some shading with this ink but you can’t really see it in my picture.00CB1B29-1230-4838-86C6-D9A519649198.thumb.jpeg.949a264b991f0a1087751102ad8aa3ce.jpeg

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
