Being a huge fan of the Platinum Music nib and the F-C Music nib, as well as the owner of a BB Lamy 2000 and a formal italic Nakaya C nib, I find myself quite curious as to how the line width of the Italic Edge compares among other very wide Italics, but just as importantly, how wet it is. 

 

My current holy grail of a nib is one that is firehose wet but with the very sharp line variation of a formal italic. You can get something like this when you use a Speedball C-series nib, which is flexible and cut a little like a right oblique music nib, but that's obviously a dip pen nib. 

 

It doesn't look like this Italic Edge has quite the line variation, but it does look like it might have the wetness. I wonder how the wetness compares to the modern Music nibs and custom ground italics?

We should take this to a new thread, but I have the Platinum Music Nib, the FC music Nib, a Sailor Music nib custom ground, the Italic Edge, the Speedball, the Lamy 2000OB, a couple of Pineider Quill Stubs and several custom ground nibs.  I wrote you a letter with the nibs I have here with me.  I will scan when we I get back to the office.  For now, here is a picture of the nibs of the pens I used in your letter.   

 

In my overly inky broad stubby opinion, you either want the Pineider La Grande Bellezza Gemstone Stub or Scheaffer Legacy Heritage Stub or CI.  Good luck finding the Sheaffer.

Note that I didn't suggest the more recent versions of the Bellezza because Pineider fixed the problem of the nib being a firehose.

I know less about the geometry of the MB specialty nibs than many others (i.e., Franco on the MB 149 Calligraphy thread), and when examining the nib with a loupe, the bottom corners are rounded ( like a stub),  while the top corners are sharper (like an Italic or CI nib).  This observation is borne out in performance, as so far I have found the Italic Edge to be much more forgiving than any formal Italic nib I’ve ever written with, never catching a corner or digging into the paper. I would say even more forgiving than a Cursive Italic ground nib. If I had to guess, I’d say (mine) performs like a nib between a stub and a Cursive Italic for regular writing (effortless, requiring little if any special attention to the nib position). Fritz Schimpf indicates line widths of 0.3mm-1.3mm in horizontal and vertical directions respectively.  I measured my nib at 2.1mm in width with a micrometer.  Line width, or course, will vary with ink and paper. I haven’t seen any pictures that show the nib geometry clearly, and I don’t have the skill or equipment to provide that kind of detail.  As regards wetness, mine is very wet, making many dry inks more enjoyable to use for me.

I'm excited to report that mine arrived!

 

I think I've seen others report on this, but they included a free pad of A5 paper and two bottles of ink-Sundowner and zwichenlicht. I immediately inked up the latter, and have been enjoying the pen and ink both.

Thank you, and your excellent reviews and examples of this pen were what encouraged me to make the purchase!

 

I'm hopeful that over the coming weeks as well, I may be able to try some additional inks that you have not and offer my thoughts on them, although you certainly have done a lot!

I can't put this pen down! The ability to use this pen as an EF is a game-changer for me, as it lets me carry a single pen that both gives me a wide, bold, expressive line and an EF for small notes, annotations, etc.

For those of us who shy away from this rather exclusive pen but seek a possibility to experience the fun of a two-in-one-nib (broad and fine), I might state again that with many Sailor music nibs you can also wrote a lot finer when the pen is flipped. Sailor's zoom nibs are even designed to be used both ways. And although there the broad side might not be as impressive as with this amazing and precious MB, those of you interested might still give the humble Sailor a try.

 

(Of course, the excitement might not be the same, but neither is the hefty price tag.)

While, as Julie mentioned, Sailor offers this capability out of the box many other pens can be easily and affordably customized in this way, the only requirement being that there is sufficient tipping material present. Most M or B nibs satisfy this requirement. I did a regrind on a battered old Parker 51 M so that normal writing became an expressive mini-stub and reverse writing became a smooth EF. The P51 is interesting in this regard because the hooded nib hides the pen’s orientation from view, so it doesn’t look like you’re writing in reverse. It really is two pens in one. A nibmeister can do this mod for a price that doesn’t even hit 10% of this exclusive MB. (For the record, I love MB!)
