Hello everyone,

this nib is very attractive. Nevertheless, I am still having trouble getting an idea of the width of the stroke. On Fritz Schimpf's site it is described as 1.40mm, which seems to be more or less what I get from my m800 IB. That being said, when I look at the nicely provided writing samples in this thread, I get the impression that this nib does not write as wide as the m800 IB (which is extremely fun to play  with but a little too broad for my day to day use).
Could this be due to the "rotating" feature of this specific nib allowing for flexible width? Or is this feature an "on or off" (I mean: either 4B or EEF but nothing in between)?

~ @poti67:

Thank you for your comment.

There are three Pelikan M800 IBs on my writing desk, all provided by Fritz Schimpf, and all with a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind.

The Italic Edge nib lays down strokes on paper which vary with both fingertip pressure and with the angle of the nib face to the paper surface.

The fine lines in posted photos from various users are achieved by rotating the nib approximately 70º to the left.

The Italic Edge strokes have generally seemed wider than than Pelikan M800 IB strokes, yet no less crisp.

The Italic Edge provides a generous ink flow, therefore inks which are regarded as being more dry make possible less broad strokes.

The more well-lubricated inks typically provide wider strokes which are nonetheless legible.

Experimenting with the pen's angle relative to the paper also results in varying ink stroke widths.

When the pen is held in the fingertips more or less straight up from the paper surface, the line produced is different than when the pen is held at a low angle in the fingertips.

As with most broader nibs, the Italic Edge nib might not be the ideal choice for the small, detailed annotations of a scholar.

Rather, Italic Edge does well on A4 paper where ample space makes it possible to expansively write or sketch.

What's great fun, as noted by @JulieParadise, is to see the rich display of ink color which such broad strokes provide.

In the ink and handwriting samples posted, it's evident that lines vary in width, e.g. when the pen is being lifted at the end of a stroke, there's a diminution of width.

Italic Edge is easy to manage and great fun in regular daily use. As with any fountain pen nib, it's not designed for all needs, but does greatly please in many ways.

@Tom Kellie: Thank you for the clear explanations. They clear up my concern perfectly. Now I know that this pen is probably not the one I am looking for. Maybe a standard 149 with a B nip and a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind would be more up to my expectations. But that would be a whole new topic.

I compared several nibs. I think if the IB is too broad, then this would be too broad for you.

I started to learn some new scripts with this pen upon suggestion from a dear pen friend: Gothic and Caroline here. It’s nice to mix them up a little as writing Gothic alone for long can be visually tiring.

The Montblanc Fritz Schimpf Italic Edge is a carefully designed nib great for both calligraphy and daily writing, which I have been having lots of fun with.

Paper: Brause Calligraphy pad of A5 size

@comoThank you for gracing the thread with these two scripts, the shapes for which seem very well formed already by your hand.  I would imagine that writing only in Gothic for lengthy periods might be physically as well as visually tiring.

Caroline, with its clear and graceful lines, not only appears an ideal refresher from Gothic — and whatever undoubtedly lovely illuminated manuscript I like to fantasise that you might be preparing to labour over, Como — but has great appeal on its own merits.

Sundowner looks a treat laid down at your skilled hand by this special collaborative effort of Montblanc and Fritz Schimpf.

~ @NoType:

Thank you so much for your helpful summary.

Your careful work may encourage others to consider adding Italic Edge to their writing desk.

The nib brings out the rich color tones of quality inks.

In addition to what's been listed above, the following were also shown today:

      •  Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-Syogun

      •  Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris

      •  Sailor Kiwaguro

      •  Pelikan 4001 Violet

In another thread concerning Italic Edge (in the Mall) I was asked if there was any compensation for posting handwriting samples and photos.

I replied that there is no form of compensation or discount. The only compensation is the unalloyed joy of using a wonderful fountain pen nib with outstanding inks.

Again, many thanks for your ink use summary for Italic Edge.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
