KWZ Ink (KWZI) Dromgoole's Exclusive Discovery Green - Super Sheen

Thanks to @Sinistral1 and @DromgoolesHouston for this amazing ink. Sinistral sent me a sample of hers and I think I need to acquire this ink.  I'm not a fan of blue leaning greens, but this ink doesn't appear too blue and it is downright perky. @kestrel would probably agree that it is similar to Levenger Gemstone Green especially if it has dried in the out a little in the cartridge.   I'll be uploading more pictures and comparisons shortly.

For this review, I used a Pelikan M800 with a BB nib.  The nib is new to me, but based on my experiences with Pelikan pens, I would suggest that the pen / nib is a wet writer.  The flow in this pen was perfect so I'd say at a minimum it is NOT dry and I suspect it is a slightly wet writing ink.  I will update you more when I try it in another pen.

Also keep in mind that this nib is laying down a HUGE amount of ink, so I'd suspect some feathering, bleed through and show through but happily this is a no feathering, no bleeding, sheening ink.

  • I didn't get feathering on even the worst paper - index cards.
  • I didn't get bleed through on most papers, but the recycled copy paper (which has been horrible with every fountain pen ink I've tried since I bought it).  I will also update you with some lined notebook paper later.
  • I only had some show through when the paper was really white and this ink was quite dark.  I will include both sides of the pages in my scans.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I've never done the chromatography images before, but here was my first attempt.

Okay, so let's start with Rhodia Paper.

large.20220716_014.jpg.f73c8781d4fa7bd25c4c50c9fea6256f.jpg

As you can see from the reverse, no bad behaviors.

large.20220716_015.jpg.98412a19b49d5997eacb34be6d48325b.jpg

I tried to show you the sheen, and for now, here is what I can show you.

This paper is Royal Bond 25% Cotton Watermarked, the kind we used to have to use for court filings.  The scanner didn't pick up any ink on the reverse so you don't see any scans, but I'd say that you can read the ink through the paper, if you want.

Thanks @Kalessin for helping me with this nib.

Thanks @Inky.Fingers for encouraging me to find a BIg Broad NIB.

This Wasau marble laid paper is vintage 1990s and some of my very favorite.  You can see sheen on this paper.

So this paper is Neenah Royal Sundance Laser Laid, Brilliant White.   If you look closely, you can see some of the blue ink on the reverse.

large.20220716_003.jpg.abb669148cb594bf1b5aa52e01b3d68b.jpg

And here is the reverse, you can see some artifacts, but only where I washed the ink.

This copy paper is Norpac Natural Choice, 30% recycled content.

As you can see, it is not fountain pen perfect, but notice, that you don't see feathering even with this HUGE nib. Also, the ink was more water resistant on this paper when I was trying to do the washes.  (Which is not to say that the paper makes the ink water proof, I'm sure this ink would be gone if I actually exposed the paper to water.  I may yet try that.)

large.20220716_005.jpg.7c10b9b958530dd7db1db5cc5612e22c.jpg

So, on the reverse, is where you can see the bad behavior of the paper. I don't blame the ink since the ink has been well behaved on every other paper, but every FP ink I've tried has shown up on the reverse on this paper.  Also, you can see more bleed through where ever I have washed the doodle.

Wow!  Great review, @amberleadavis!  Love how it matches the m800, and love that sheen. :)  Thanks for the review.

Don't give up, more papers and some comparisons are coming up.

Now, this paper is amazing. It never jams and never causes issues.  OH, and my pens love it.

So if you are looking for great office paper, this is it!

The show through happened again, where I washed the doodles.  This paper didn't show any sheen, but I have gotten it to show shading.

So, here are the cheap index cards.  The only bleed through was from the turquoise BIC marker I originally used for the eyes.

This paper is circa 1970s or even 1980s and is similar to an onion skin. The sheen is amazing.

So, finally, you get to see the Tomoe River Paper, which I have had for at least 5 years. The sheen is great, as you would expect.  No unsightly blemishes from the ink.

AND FINALLY, the comparisons.  Thanks to @Uncial for the CRV.

And even on Tomoe River paper, some inks are not well behaved.

That's a fun review

The ink reminds a bit of Diamine's November Rain, but my preference is for the pen and that gorgeous double broad nib ;)

Great stuff all around!  And this paper may be the replacement US folk are looking for - can you tell us where you buy it?  (Assuming it's a chain type store...)

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
