Inks, Pens and Art Supplies Lightfastness Test

Recommended Posts

I am currently conducting a lightfastness test in my little studio, and I figured it might be of interest to this community. I am testing a variety of things, but I tried making it easy for strict fountain pen users to find what they're looking for by marking fountain pen inks with a * in the list bellow.

The test is done on a piece of Life Bank Paper Writing Paper cut in half, taped inside a single-panel west-facing window, in front of a roofed-balcony in Canada.
Not sure of the number of direct sunlight hours as I am never in a position to witness it myself, but there are at least a few! The control half of the sheet was concealed face-down in an opaque drawer, and I installed the other half in my window on June 8th.
Here are the materials tested, and how they fared after a month of sun exposure :

* = Fountain pen inks

Green : Visibly unchanged. There might be a very slight difference, but it would be unrecognizable if you didn’t have a point of comparison to scrutinize.

Yellow : Changed. Colour shifted and/or paled, but mark is still visible/readable.

Red : Disappeared or almost. Readability is severely threatened.

So far I haven't been much surprised. I know now that many of Noodler's archival inks fade with time, at least the funky colours that tend to fade most in general. I have the sad confirmation that although they also use the term ''archival'' in their branding, Uni-ball is not a viable alternative for the aforementioned funky colours. YOTP is not a forever highlighter, but it sure fares better than most (who seem to weirdly turn brown). People have been debating whether Blue Ghost is a good way to leave behind fugitive inks a forever UV trace -- since it's already paled quite a bit, I would imagine it isn't. If any artist out there is stuck with a poorly-erasable color eno sketch under their black fade-resistant ink, I would suggest leaving it in a window for a month, as it will completely disappear! Shin-Ryoku is going very strong for an Iroshizuku ink. Lastly, Sharpie pens are also holding on much better than I thought, I wonder if it'll last.

I'm a bit disappointed to see all of my non-waterproof black fountain pen inks fade and change colours. If anyone knows of a good black, lightfast water-soluble ink that I could use for washes, please let me know!

I should check back in with new scans in a few months.

Original scan; 1 month scan; 1 month UV pictures (control sheet is on the right) :

Great job. If you want truly lightfast inks, try De Atramentis Document inks. Their artist inks are good too, but supposedly they're slightly less lightfast than the document versions. Only testing can say.

De Atrementis has also an archival black, but I'm not into black inks really... :)

I'm sad to announce Blue Ghost has effectively disappeared from the page...

Thank you for the recommendation!  I have thought about investing in them, the sepias in particular. But finding conservatively-coloured lightfast inks that are waterproof hasn't been too much of a challenge for me, & I'm quite happy with how mine are faring (it's just the funky ones that are sad...).

I'm still on the quest for the elusive watersoluble lighfast black though... if anyone knows one!

I'm happy to see my little test is useful to some of you :) I'll keep it going to see which of my oranges turn into reds... See you in a few more months.

Ouch, now I have a lot of interesting stuff to add to my to-read list. Thank you, it is most interesting, specially the comparison to non-FP inks.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
