old pen, new to here

Hi folks. My name is Jim and I've just been introduced to fountain pens. Of course, there is a story.

My Mom recently passed away and in her belongings is this gorgeous gold fountain pen which belonged to her father's father. He received it when he retired in 1920. The pen is a Conklin Crescent-Filler pen. It is in excellent shape, little to no wear in its sculptured design. It had an ink stained gold nib. The ink sac was in pieces. So I looked up how to fix it, ordered a new ink sac and how to replace it, and the pen writes beautifully. Not my penmanship though, ugh! But I am learning, and practicing.

I do have a question about another nib, hoping to get a flex nib that will fit it, so you'll probably see me in the forums. If you do, feel free to say hi.

Welcome to FPN! That is one lovely pen. It must have been very satisfying to restore it.

I think I was sweating bullets all along the way. Since all the restorers where pedaling paranoia about screwing up the pen. Definitely didn't want to break it. Felt great when I wrote my first line with it. That line, "Beneath the flowering mango where peace and perfume drip, Solomon does the tango and Sheba shakes a hip". I thought it much better than the quick brown fox... even without the other six letters.

Welcome to FPN.

The pen is a beauty and the story behind it makes it more valuable. Do keep it and cherish it, and write with it from time to time, it is at least 102 yers old and in a perfect and beautiful shape.

Congratulations 👍

@jauck -- Greetings from Pittsburgh!  :W2FPN:

Beautiful pen!  And so nice that you have a family heirloom pen (I wish I still had the pen/pencil combo that had been my grandfather's -- which I couldn't figure out how it worked, since I was only about 7 or 8 -- AND that you got it back up and running.

I looked at some vintage crescent fillers at a pen show last fall, and just could NOT afford any of them :crybaby: And the ones I saw were not nearly as nice as the one that was your mom's.

Nice to meet you Paul and Ruth. I do plan on keeping it and writing with it often. A couple of people have told me I might be able to get an almost obscene price for it, but that still wouldn't be enough to get it away from me. My friends are going to think I'm on a quest to revive writing. Getting a letter in the mail, how often does that happen these days?

Thanks again for the welcoming.

Welcome to FPN.  That is one stunning pen.  Conklin nibs from that era were (and are) a lot of fun to write with.

Below is a scan of a page from a 1917 Conklin catalog.  Yours looks like one of the X21 pens on the left, one of the more expensive Conklins at the time.  Enjoy your heirloom.

That's interesting. The engraving states the year 1920. A collector said it was most likely from earlier, he was guessing 1918. Pretty close. Thanks for the welcome.

Funny you should mention penmanship, I've ordered ,"Polishing Your Penmanship",  by Barbara Nichol. Hopefully it should be here soon, it's running late. thanks for the welcome.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
