Budding ink & paper enthusiast saying hello

Hello FPN,

I have lurked on & off occasionally in the past 5 or so years.

Over the course of the past two decades, I have accumulated a number of fountain pens, but never used a color of ink other than black. I used quite a variety of black inks, but never ventured beyond that color.

Within the past three months I have begun experimenting with a number of Pilot and Sailor inks and I'm now hooked on this whole new world of colors.

I'm joining FPN to now join the discussion to find more inks, and to maybe share some of my accumulated experience, 19 years worth, of using particular black inks in a wide assortment of pens under a wide spectrum of circumstances.

Looking forward to discovering new colors and writing experiences!

Welcome.

Ink is a rabbit hole unto itself. It's a fantastic means of expression and adding a bit of your own character to your writing. Just keep in mind that if you have too many and don't get back to them within a year or two, you can have mould issues.

For many years I had a single bottle of ink, Montblanc black, that I used to fill the two pens I had.  When it ran out I would just replace it with the exact same color.

Now I find myself designing sample vial holders and bottle arrangers that we print on the 3D printer.  I still like to sample before committing to a whole bottle.

I have many of both... and I only keep one pen inked in black these days.  I have a Sailor that is permanently paired with Sailor Jentle black cartridges.

I have discovered I have an extreme affinity for teals and browns.  Who knew?

Welcome, and good luck!

Welcome to the ink party! I was so-so about fountain pens until I realized there was waterproof inks that were good for watercolor and art stuff. Get samples before getting a whole bottle. You know exactly how long it takes to finish a bottle of ink and you don't want to be stuck with a color you don't like.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
