Soften or Lube Esterbrook 484 base seals

I obtained a NOS 484 desk pen set that I'm very happy about. However I had a devil of a time prying the black top halves off the glass base-- they were firmly stuck to the rubber gasket. I'm not talking about the red ink-level ring but a black rubber? that lines the inner wall of the ink receptacle.  I assume they were once soft rubber but mine now feel like hard, black sandpaper.

Can I use silicone grease or???  Thanks in advance, Dave

Addendum: I just now saw that the top, black part of the ink well has a O-ring around it. So maybe that's what needs lubed or ???

On a pool filter webpage I found out that silicone grease is good to use on "O"-rings, so that's my plan. It will be fun to use this desk pen. I'm just old enough to remember going to the bank with my parents and finding desk set fountain pens with chains for use by the customers to fill out checks, deposit slips and the like.
