Hello from the Netherlands

MvE

Recommended Posts

I am a long time fountain pen user from Utrecht in the Netherlands. Until some three years ago I used one fountain pen which got replaced with a new one when it broke down. Now I have a few more and enjoy having inked up more pens than advised with different inks and writing with these different pens and colors. During the pandemic and the lock downs, I turned myself to repairing my first fountain pen, a button filler that belonged to my grandma. And I took the next step by making a fountain pen by hand out of raw resin and using a lathe.

Yes, I'll make at least one next fountain pen; by coincidence I have planned to experiment next Saturday with  resin and colors in preperation for making the whole bar from which the pen will be turned later on.

Hello, and welcome - what a great leap to take. I'd love a lathe... :)

Thanks. I don't own a lathe, neither have the space for it. But a good friend does and he appreciated it that I have worked with his lathe, under his supervision of course, for the first time in 20 years of friendship. With very good help, a lot of patience, quite some failures and starting over and a bit of accuracy it is actually not so hard... but it took me a lot of time.

Welcome MvE! I'm in Ireland, and glad to have another member from Europe, to help balance out the forum. A lot of the pen stores I order from are in the Netherlands.

BTW, I was in Utrecht a few years back, at an academic conference. A lovely city indeed.

A lovely city indeed. For me it’s been too long since I visited Ireland… seems I have to sooth it with listening to some of my favorite artists who’re from Ireland.

You have successfully entered a rabbit hole, who knows what it'll yield and where it'll lead.

Enjoy the fascinating journey and feel free to ask/share...  thumbup.gif

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
