This is what happens when someone gives me something...

I always tell people not to give me anything, because I will likely & almost immediately begin to collect whatever it is; I am one of those kind of people.

My wife, of all people, should know this by now, and not ever give me anything that I don't already have at least one of.  In her defense, I actually already had the Mont Blanc pen, which had been a gift from my mother and was the last of a batch of five or so that I had in college back in the '90s.  The plastic cap tip and clip were broken, and the silver finish was tarnished, and for Christmas this past year, my wife sent it off and had it repaired & refurbished.  It took forever to get it back, but I've had it for a couple months now.  It's a ballpoint 146, and I have enjoyed writing with it, so over the past couple weeks I did what I do, which is to go down the rabbit hole and go absolutely bonkers.  I quickly realized that fountain pens were where I would eventually wind up, so after getting a few more ballpoint and roller ball pens online, I decided last week to take the plunge.  And then I got very lucky, I believe.

At an estate sale this past weekend, I hit the motherlode.  On the first day of the sale I bought 7 fountain pens for $350 - a gorgeous Parker Duofold, a Parker 75, a Sheaffer Targa, another vintage Shaeffer, a Cross, a Waterman, and a Rotring.  I went back late in the afternoon on the second (and final) day of the sale and bought everything that was left for $200 - an additional 31 pens, for a total of 38 pens at $550, which averages out to under $15 per pen.  (Well, per writing instrument, as there were two pencils in the lot.)

At any rate, this is what happens when people give me things.  I am an inveterate collector, and already had too many collections on my hands, what with the records, guitars, comic books, stamps, vintage Hawaiian shirts, etc.  But I'm here, the damage is done, and I now need to figure out first, what is is that I have gotten, precisely, and second, how to get ink into these things & begin writing with them.  To at least get started, I ordered a plastic Parker Jotter on Amazon and have been scratching around with that for a few days now, but I am quite looking forward to interacting with some of the fine writing instruments that I have just acquired.

I'm including photos of everything I got at the sale.

Welcome to the deep end of the rabbit hole, @PENny Dreadful:)  That's quite a start...  Maybe we should avoid mentioning ink samples and paper... (Oops!)

Welcome! At least it's a utilitarian addiction since pens can be used for productive purposes! (That's my justification anyway.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
