Hello everyone!

 

I am new to FPN and I am amazed by the amount of valuable information this network contains.

 

As someone who studied math and electrical engineering, I have always been particular about my pens. For years I have exclusively used fine needle-tip gel pens. Occasionally, I would reach for a fountain pen -- always with an EF nib.

 

Recently while going through my mom's drawer, I found a collection of fountain pens from 60s, 70s, and 80s. Most of them needed a clean and a thorough flush. Then I inked a MB Meisterstuck 12 (which my recently deceased grandpa bought for my mom in the early 70s) and I experienced a truly wow moment. The pen wrote not just smoother than anything I had tried before, but the nib was playful. I felt as if the pen is speaking to me. Ever since that moment I have been enthralled with fountain pens -- I have been reading about them and even tried to restore a few vintage models.

 

I recently moved from Oxford to Penarth, Wales and would love to know more about the local pen community.

Hello, and welcome :) 

 

I'm afraid I'd have been more use on Oxford than Penarth, but there are definitely a fair number of members in Wales, and you're not far from the temptations of Pure Pens in Newport of course...

Greetings from a Welshman in County Durham! That drawer sounds to have been quite something. And you are right: the expertise on the FPN is truly amazing. Somebody out there knows the answer to just about anything you need to know.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
