Nib questions

I have a few Pelikans, vintage and modern, but I don't know a lot about Pelikans in general. So recently I acquired some older Pelikan nibs, pretty much on impulse. Here are some of them.

They all seem to have the same housing. I tried them in my pens, and the only ones where they seemed to fit is a 120 Type II (I don't know what the Type II refers to, it's information the seller provided), and two Senators (a Windsor and an older model that I don't know the name of). They don't fit my 140, 400NN, nor any of the more modern ones I have. So I am interested to know what other Pelikan models these would fit?

Also, as a secondary and more general question, if I wanted to swap nibs between this housing and a more modern housing (say a M400 or M600), is that possible, and how difficult is it?

I'm looking forward to learning more!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Well, I did learn what a Type II Pelikan 120 is -- it's one made by Merz & Krell, who also probably made the Senators, so that makes it less of a coincidence that they use the same nib housing. And it doesn't look too good for this housing fitting any other non-M & K Pelikans.

Do the reform nibs fit into Pelikans?

Sorry, I'm not clear, are you asking about Esterbrook reform nibs? If so, I just tried one and it was a very different housing so it didn't fit.

edited to add: sorry, the Esterbrook nibs are Renew, not reform, so my mistake. That said, if there are Reform pens, I don't have any to try out. Maybe someone else does.

further edited: I forgot, I did have a new Reform pen once and the nib unit did not fit one of my Senator pens as the nibs in the above photo do (I found a post by me about this). I did not try it in any of my Pelikans, and I no longer have the pen.

Well, after all that, I guess it was Rotring and I thought they looked like a similar housing.

Ah. It does, but at a minimum I think the Rotring thread is coarser than the ones I got.

I'm still hoping to hear some wisdom about swapping nibs from one type of Pelikan housing to another...

I've not done it but doubt you'd have any trouble.

Correct, the 120 Type II is also known as the Merz and Krell. Made from 1974-1978. They do not fit the 1950's 120 or any modern one either for that matter. There is also a 400NN that was made by Merz and Krell. More expensive than other 400NN's.

Well, I tried it. Swapped one of these nibs into an M600 nib unit, and it seems to fit, and write, fine. It's a semi-flexy Fine so a fairly different experience from the original very firm Fine, and that's what I was hoping for.

@Paul-in-SFSuper! I'm glad to hear it worked for you and I may consider doing the same but in a M200 nib.

If I‘m not mistaken, the threads of the nib housings of all original Pelikans are interchangeable but maybe not with Merz&Krell ones. But 400 and larger nib units would not fit into a 140 due to the shorter inner cap.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
