the czar's accountant's pencil or ... a pipe fitting?

Recommended Posts

this objet d'whatever has been in my family for as long as i, at the age of 67, can remember and for that entire time all i ever heard about it was it came out of russia and belonged to the last czar's accountant.  as it happens, my great uncle carl was part of an american delegation that served in russia during that country's great awful famine, in 1921, so the accountant's pen theory has always made a kind of sense, given that the last czar's rule ended in 1917.  and carl did seem to be hanging out in certain circles (in photo, he is second from the right).  so there's all that.  and, as the pics of the so-called pen show, a twist of the outer most element does extend the pencil bit out, as you'd think it should.

on the other hand, i took a good hard look at it the other day and, in the faintest possible lettering, saw the word "patent".  that's it.  nothing more.  patent.  which would seem to me to dash the whole pen idea unless of course it was a pen that was gifted to that soviet accountant.  personally, though, i've begun to think that whatever this is, it's as likely to be a common pipe fitting as anything else.

what's it made of?  i'm not sure.  but the metal has no smell and a magnet is not at all attracted to it, both of which might indicate silver but then again ... nah, probably not.

in any event, what do ya'll think?  thanks!

eBay, search for antique / vintage .... pencil .... holder / extender.

And sort by highest price.

Those search options bring up some interesting comparisons.

That is cool.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
