Sheaffer King’s Gold Ink

Dan Carmell

Recommended Posts

I’ve got three tiny (12ml !!) bottles of an old Sheaffer color. I’d like to give these away to anyone who is relatively new, an ink fiend (but who isn’t?), and new to this obscure ink.

The bottle are full to the brim and the caps tighter than tight (it’s going to take a six year old body builder or a tool to uncap these), so I suspect the ink is good, apart from any color degradation from time (been in drawers and cupboards as long as I’ve had them, though). But with those spiffy new needle cartridge/converter fillers, those 12 milliliters are available without losing half of it, so out they go.

The others inks aren’t available, just props. Sheaffer lavender was quite nice, as was the burgundy. Full disclosure: I didn’t like this color then or now but some certainly did. It was an unusual color in the time before Private Reserve & Diamond & Noodlers and the rainbow flood we all have access to!

Happy to mail on my dime anywhere in the US. I’ll watch the thread for the first three requests.

[I didn’t reread the PIF guidelines, so I hope I’m not violating any, but if I have, please let me know.)

Oooh, I'd also really enjoy one and can help with postage if you'd like.

You’ve got bottle #2! PM me with your address. Thanks, but no postage help needed, that’s part of the PIF. People were really good to me in the pen world, always, nice to give back.

I LOVE this ink.  It is a favorite, but I still have a teeny amount so not a request, just a kudos.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

It is and I’d almost given up on giving it away. Send your address and I’ll get it out early next week with the others. Even if you don’t like the color, I think you’ll find it interesting.

All three tiny bottles are claimed! I imagine one of the lucky (??!!) people will post an ink sample after receiving it.

Very generous of you.  Not in, but curious what it looks like.

When I first started here, Kings Gold was one of the inks that people seemed to wax nostalgic about -- almost as much as Parker Penman Sapphire.

Congratulations to the three lucky recipients!

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

❤️ Such a good ink.

I got a sample of ppsaphire but I never heard of kings til this post.

Also getting to know Dan though direct messages- he's genuinely a cool guy! That opportunity in itself is spectacular!

It got discontinued a few years after I got active at Pentrace and later here, along with several other colors, including the fabled lavender and at least one other color. KG was a love/hate thing for many and I wasn’t really an admirer. For several years afterwards you could find the NoNonsense calligraphy pen in a blister pack with these little bottles. I would buy them, sell the pen, and hoard the bottles—that’s how I got lavender!

I stayed away from a few chances I had at several Parker Penman inks because their rep was so bad. I was given Sapphire carts and used them in a specific easy-to-clean pen. It was an very intense blue but probably wouldn’t merit a second glances with the amazing colors today. I’d totally forgotten until I peeked in my ink cupboard.

Thanks.  Interesting color but not one I would see myself using.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
