Recommended Posts

Hey friends, long time

my pen dealer found me this pocket pen, it has 22K fine nib.

has anyone seen one similar before? Or know anything about it?

it seems like a special version… this is my first time seeing it on the market.

The clip and the angle at the top of the cap, plus the shape of the barrel end, make it look like a Platinum, is there any branding?

I have seen decorated Japanese pocket pens before, although I don't collect them so I don't know whether other decorated pens resemble this one. My sense is that most of the one's I've seen have been quite a bit less ornate than this one.

The other unusual feature of the pen would, I think, be the 22 kt nib. I only know of a few Sailor pens with 21 kt nibs, I wasn't aware that any were made with 22 kt nibs. So it might be some kind of special edition. No doubt someone more knowledgeable will come along soon.

@Paul-in-SF yes, it is indeed Platinum!

From what I understand, Pilot, sailor, and platinum all have their own version of 22K pocket pen at some point. But I have not yet seen a decorative one like this. The 22K platinum I have seen are more classic black and gold trim design, which is mentioned in FPoJ.

I have just acquired a sailor 23K pocket pen. Will share photo when it arrives.

Oh, and I don't really do eBay other than to research pricing but I recall seeing a bunch of vintage Japanese pens being sold by a single seller that were basically fake maki-e. This pen made me think of those...

This is aftermarket decoration. Platinum never did this to one of their short models.

Frankly, some are quite nice.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
