Tests of Some 'Durable' Noodler's Inks

Recommended Posts

I did sunlight and water tests of 13 Noodler's inks and Hero 232 Iron Gall ink.  I call these Noodler's "durable" inks because some are labelled by Nathan as archival, water proof, water resistant, fire resistant or bulletproof. After my test photos I've posted my own notes on how the individual inks are labelled. The inks names were written with a glass dip pen on HP 32lb laser paper.

Sunlight test   The test sheet was place in a south facing window here in sunny San Diego from January 23 to March 23, 2022

Water Test.  The paper was submerged for approximately two minutes and then hung to dry.

My list of the advertised ink descriptions (in alphabetical order)

54th Massachusetts. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Baltimore Canyon Archival, Waterproof, Permanent

Black Swan Australian Roses. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Fox Red. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Galileo Manuscript  Bulletproof, Waterproof, good lubrication

Golden Brown. Bullet Proof, Forge Resistant, Water Resistant

Hunter Green. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Kiowa Pecan. Bullet Proof, Forge Resistant, Water Resistant

Kuprin. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

La Reine Mauve. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Red Black. Bullet Proof, Forge Resistant, Water Resistant

Tchaikovsky. Bullet Proof, Forge Resistant, Water Resistant

Tolstoy. Archival, Water resistant, Bullet proof

Some Personal Takes from These Tests

Baltimore Canyon did very well in both tests and has become my default ink

I was surprised how well Fox Red did in the fade tests as I've always heard that reds and browns were more fugitive

Tolstoy near totally disappeared in the fade test and is out of my life. There are plenty of other turquoise inks on the market

Kiowa Pecan did acceptably well in both tests. A very lovely colored ink that it is a regular in my pens

Hunter Green, a very bright green and a good performer in the tests. I use it often

I always keep a pen loaded with 54th Massachusetts and Galileo (a FPN ink)

I haven't used Australian Roses, Golden Brown,or Red Black that much but their decent test results tempt me to use them more

Kuprin and Tchaikovsky never went zing to the strings of my heart

:) Thanks for these!  Really interesting results.  I'm most surprised that the Hero ink withstood sunlight.

I love it! What's up with Tolstoy?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Well, he died. :(  Poor fellow, but then, we all have to do it eventually...  Oh, you mean the ink.  Well, it appears to have followed his example... :P

If it's an IG ink as documented, laying it down with a glass dip pen may have meant a significantly higher amount of ink on the page. In my own tests, IG can be pretty durable to light provided that it's thickly applied. Not forever, of course, but definitely more durable than the lighter applications.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
