Hello from SW MO!

Hello! Recent convert to fountain pens, current owner of some sharks and an ooly splendid. :)

I'm a college student in southwest Missouri! (Joplin Area) I love the customization and flair of fountain pens, and as an ambitious lefty I decided to give it a try. I'm loving it! This community is so welcoming to newbies like me, and it's so refreshing!

I'm hoping to eventually get into making my own pens, but that's a while away yet. I'm planning to get a twsbi eco or some other good lecture pen at the end of the semester to celebrate, so that's my goal currently.

I love navy blue and brown inks, and any pen in purple brings me joy!

Welcome to FPN, @extinct! :)  Glad you've joined us.  I think a pen like the Wing Sung 601 would make a good lecture pen - hooded nib so it won't dry out quickly, large ink capacity, quiet and fast slip-cap.  I like the Eco, too, but the screw cap may not be the greatest for lectures - though paired with some Private Reserve Infinity ink might be enough to let you just leave it uncapped for the whole lecture. :)

That could be a good idea! I'm not totally set on anything yet, so it's good to see some advice! I'll look into both of those. I don't mind the screw cap, my sharks have them and it doesn't bother me, but it's good to keep in mind anyway. Thanks for replying!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
