In trying to hone my skills at grinding, polishing and tuning nibs I am looking for a source of ‘bulk’ #5 and #6 steel nibs on which to practice.

Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.

I'm sure JoWo and Bock can both satisfy as large a bulk order of #5 and #6 steel nibs as you wish to place.

 

Cheap is a different matter. If you want cheap, then obviously you'd want to buy from a Chinese manufacturer. For example, Zhejiang Lishui Lantian Pen Industrial Co. Ltd., which owns the HongDian trademark, does OEM production work for other brands, so you might want to give them a try.

 

Buying a (relatively) small number of units at at time as a retail customer — which would be the opposite of ‘bulk’ buying — would be a different matter altogether.

Or in eBay. You can get packs of 5-10 nibs for Jinhao pens (#5 or #6) for very cheap.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

If you really want large tipping to practice grinds, you can't go wrong with these:

1.2 or 1.5 mm ball on a #6 nib, for a reasonable price.  I'm just about to start in on the five I just received ...

A single huge ball.:yikes:........that would be the place to start, one can do a B on the bottom and a F on the top.....or M and EF.

 

And I complain about the double kugel on the modern post 97 Pelikan nibs.:headsmack:

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
