Ink flow: Surprising dry in my converter-fed Pilot Kaküno. When I'm using just a Pilot steel F nib as a dip pen nib with no feed, the ink doesn't seem to really want to cling to the metal, but is in something of a hurry to get onto the page instead; I think that was what was making the marks on the first part of the ink review sheet look much darker/wetter.

Drying time: There is still minimal smudging after 25, 30, or even 40 seconds if you're really looking for offence. Generally speaking, after 25 seconds there isn't enough smudging to distract. Even especially wet writing doesn't seem to take much longer to dry to the point of being safe to touch.

Water resistance: Poor. Ink marks start disappearing from the page once wet for longer than (my guesstimate of) 60 seconds.

Feathering: None to minimal on Rhodia DotPad 80g/m² paper. I did see a little bit of it on an earlier test sheet with the odd, extraordinarily wet ink mark.

Show-through: Except where the ring made by the mouth of the ink bottle is, no show-through is observed.

Bleed-through: Not observed on Rhodia DotPad 80g/m² paper.

Shading: You bet. Some shading to lavender/violet in both drier ink marks and wetter ink marks. Shading in muted blue is much more distinct where the ink marks are drier.

Sheen: Not observed.

Shimmer: No.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Damn (or 'Diam', rather ...)  these great looking Cult Pens exclusives. They recently raised their international shipping prices and I wanted to avoid ordering from them. But with this and their Vinta London Grey/Ulap exclusive ... grrrr.

Thank you very much for showing it to us! Maybe I've written it before but I love your one page reviews - so much useful information, incredibly well presented.

Lovely, concise review - thank you @A Smug Dill as always. I find it looks a bit more violet, but that may be down to paper, lighting and monitor adjustment.

I haven't had a problem with dryness with this one, but I'm using it in wider nibs - it's currently in a F-C Marietta with a 1.1 stub and flows really well. I do find that (like a lot of the lighter multichromatics) it likes piston fillers better than converters. I'm sure there's some science behind this.

It is such a pretty colour...

You mean the qualifying thresholds for free international shipping? I have to say that Cult Pens' sticking to £70 for so long — since 2018, I believe — before raising the thresholds recently has been more than decent; everyone else has already done that once, twice, or even thrice.

Cult Pens has cleaned up and removed a lot of the old site-wide discount promo codes, too. All the same, I was able to stack discounts on a couple of things, and so I've just placed my second order for a pen (padded by inks to make the free shipping threshold) in a fortnight. Its front-end customer service is still good and responsive, even though once processing of an order has passed to Global-e, I can't help but sense there's a little bit of, ”It's out of our hands from here, and we just can't afford to care that much to try to intercept or intercede, if a customer has an issue at that late stage.”

Thanks for the review, @A Smug Dill! :)  My first thought on seeing the page was "Boo Berry" (the cereal I haven't seen for more decades than I'd care to admit). :D  I'm not sure if the association is why I like it or not.  I think I might like the ink in its darkest form, but I fear it's one of those inks where a sample would be enough, especially in the lighter shades.  Regardless, I've enjoyed your presentation of the ink and now I understand why there's a "Goulet Nation" but not a "Diamination"... :lticaptd:

I am not referring to the free shipping threshold - I try to avoid it because of potential Thai customs fees on orders over 1500 Thai baht, which is currently roughly 35 pounds sterling. (That said, I did recently test that with a Stilo e Stile order above their free shipping threshold, which was significantly higher than the equivalent of 1500 THB and marked as such, and I was not charged customs fees.) Pure Pens and The Writing Desk, also from Great Britain, of course, have significantly lower international shipping rates - if I remember correctly they both use Royal Mail, which has given great service - so it's difficult to figure out Cult Pens' need to raise their shipping rates.

Interesting color.  Trying to figure out if it fits a niche I don't have filled yet -- but the slow dry time would be problematic for me.  And I'd have to figure out if I could order enough other stuff to make shipping to the US reasonable.  Especially given that the Baltimore-Washington Show is only a week and a half away, and I've got to pay SOME attention to expenses: hotel for 3 days; travel expenses (food, gasoline, tolls); expenses for the show itself (mostly in getting repairs done on pens); and maybe some shopping en route and back....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
