Help with Parker Duofold Pencil mechanism/repair

I acquired this pencil a couple of years ago with a group of mainly Parker fountain pens.  I understand it's a Duofold Pastel, Apple Green Moiré from around 1929.  I have some of the correct lead from another vintage Parker. I can insert some lead and wind it out but it does not wind back in.  I don't believe the mechanism is working correctly.   I can never wind it far enough to see the metal part that pushes out the lead.  At that point, the pencil 'clicks over' on each turn.  Can I safely get it apart to repair it?

the lead does not retract automatically. you have to turn the top knob like you want to retract the lead and once it starts 'clicking over' you can push the lead back in. done

Thanks.  I have been trying for months to get an explanation and this is the first time I've been told this.

@MarcoA63 Are you saying Parker Duofolds in general do not retract the lead when you turn the knob counter-clockwise?  It seems like a rather complex patent to result in a 'push it back in with your finger' retract method.  I mean I know mine doesn't, but I'm pretty sure that's because the mechanism is broken.  Jon Veley told me to wind the knob all the way clockwise to expel the lead and expose the pushrod but the knob just clicks over and never gets that far, the pushrod never appears...
