My goal: give up emails for personal correspondence and replace them with pen and ink letters on nice stationery.

That's an admirable goal!  There are a number of issues, though.  The most formidable one is convincing those you want to correspond with to do likewise.  I've found that 99+% of people don't want to give up their instant gratification of online communications.  I've tried sending personal letters to family and friends as an encouragement, only to get an email (or worse, text) response in return.  Every time.   There are places to find pen pals, though - just don't expect the average friend or family member to become one.

Another issue is finding "nice stationery".  I spent all afternoon today driving around to three different cities - NONE of them had any stores that carried stationery!  Oh, they had some gaudy and garish stuff meant for scrapbooking-type use, but nothing like the elegant paper/envelope sets of old.  I find it ironic that I need to search online for physical items that I want to use precisely to get offline with!  But, such is the state of shopping today.

I wish you luck with your goal, as mine is the same - but it's turning out to be more difficult than I expected...

Hi, OregonJim.

I'm not having a problem with folks replying in kind. I ask them to reply in whatever medium they feel comfortable. Some use email, some Facebook. It's all in good fun, and my cursive is definitely improving. I think I was quite lucky in my first pen choices. Both [one medium and one fine nibbed,] feel nice in the hand and write well. I do about a page of longhand/day, working on whatever annoys me with my emerging script. I'm also having lots of fun with the stamps I use. All in all, it's a delight. As far as stationery goes, I buy on the 'net.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

An old quote that can be quite aptly applied:

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
