Very good call - I wonder if what we're actually seeing is some extremely sloppy finishing on the cap end before an outline cipher has been glued into place and some rather visible bits of epoxy or similar showing as well?

@WhiteStarPens I'm sure you stand by your opinions, some of which may well be based on tangential experiences, but you might at least want to edit the factually incorrect points regarding ownership.

We've been working from home for a while but I've seen the pen in person just before Christmas and the cap button was solid silver then. It all changed to what you see in the picture in a matter of weeks. The current appearance of the pen cap button was NOT as it was out of the factory.

Also, this guy takes great care of his pens, much better than me I would guess. It is not some kind of dirt/ink/whatever. The material changed appearance, be it rust/oxidation or something else.

What a bummer.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 2 weeks later...

He ended up using the product "Goddard's Silver Dip" and it worked wonders and all the rust was off the cap without even having to rub anything. He's trying to see if it will turn out the same another time. If it does, he will once again clean it with the silver dip and then wax it.

Again, thanks to every one.

I see that Boddy is still on the board.  I have two Onoto pens, and they are excellent.  Bought them several years ago.  The silver acts like silver should.  Silver (sterling) does not rust period.  I have three Parker 75 pens in sterling, and they only need an occasional polishing cloth to remove any oxidation on the surface.  I think the owner of this pen should contact Boddy, show the photos, and demand some answer other than the one already received re silver tarnish.  It could be that Onoto has obtained an alloy that they thought was good sterlring, but wasn't.

I expect the response was based on the fact that silver will tarnish w/o study of the photo.  At any rate, Onoto should be contacted again.

With further consideration, I don't think what was shown on the pen cap is rust.  Doesn't look like rust, and there is too much of it in too short of a time.  Something else I think.  We will probably never know.

I suspect this might be the case, as I have a similar problem with a Pelikan pen I bought a few years ago that has a magnetized clip (the rest of the furniture is not) that started to rust (the rest of the furniture is like new). I made a post about it a few years ago when the clip was just begining to show some spots, now it is almost all rusted.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
