Webster - Winds Like a Watch

A thread here mentions a Sears catalog with a Webster pen which has an exclusive filler which "winds like a watch". The last post in the thread seems to have the best resolution of the catalog page.  https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/349491-sears-wishbooks-1937-96-online/#comment-4268709

I recently picked one up. The cap has a clip similar to Sheaffer military clips. The cap and barrel material reminds me of Parker shadow waves. The nib is a well-made 14k marked Webster Gold Star and the barrel is marked Webster Made in USA. The knob on the end is stamped in two places with arrows indicating direction. Turning in the direction  of the arrows (clockwise, these are left-hand threads) reveals threads attached to and turning with the knob. The knob turns until about 1/8" of threads are revealed, then stops hard.

I have been working on removing the section with no luck so far. I assume it is some kind of piston filler, but can anyone tell me what I can expect to find once I get the section loose?

Looking at the pen, it reminds me of the second generation Mabie Todd leverless pen: https://vintagepens.com/Swan_leverless.shtml

If it is like that, it's basically a button filler with a rather fancy button. If it were a piston filler, I would expect the ink window to be on the barrel and not on the section, as it is with your pen.

Interestingly, the "winds like a watch" was also a slogan used by Conklin for their Nozac pens, which were piston fillers. However, on the Nozac pens, the blind cap did not move out on turning it.

Does yours have the 'gold dot'?

I will go look and see if I have one of these.  If I do it would be apart. (At one time I was actively hunting Webster.)  Recall something a long time ago about a twist filler but don't remember if it was a Webster or another equally obscure pen.

Nethermark - thanks for the suggestions, neither quite appears to be it.

Todd - no gold dot anywhere on the pen.  I also picked up another Webster, a Gold Crown lever-filler with metal ends and an art-deco sort of look.

I'll continue to work at getting the section off.

Interesting.  I have a couple of vintage lever filler pens that were sold by Sears & Roebuck under the house brand name "Good Service" (one was in a box that had a ribbon inside saying "Diamond Medal Diplomat" (apparently another Sears-Robuck house brand).  Wondering now if Webster was another "house brand".

@bsenn -- Thanks for posting the pix

@Nethermark -- Thanks for posting the link to the old thread.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have another Webster that seems to be a button filler that twists to install. It does not fit a vac tool. Any suggestion on how to take apart?

Webster can be connected to Parker and Sears.
