(Re) beginning in pen making

Recommended Posts

Hi ! As I mentioned in my introduction, I am obiously interested in foutain pen, but also in pen making. So I would begin this topic to follow my project of pen making.

I made some pens few years ago with a lot of default and I never realy finished this project. I would like to use this base, for a new generation.

I would like to make high end pens, no kit exept nibs and feeder. I would like to work with ebonite, massive sterling silver (too many problems with plating), and why not urushi (but I don't know this material for now).

Just to have an idea few pictures of my previous tries.

Those are very attractive pens.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thank you, the design was not so bad. I think. I don't took the time to work on the project this week. But I am sure that I will find some old spare parts and the 3d design of this model.

I will show pictures you when it will found.

Ok, I searched in my old project stock.

Some Ebonite blank, some already turned parts and some Bock nibs... So, I found enough materials to make new pens !

But I don't understand why the turned body are shorter than my 3D model and why I made a new version... If I had write some notes... even if I it had been whith basic ball pen!

I also open a instagram account for this project : https://www.instagram.com/initiales_atelier/

And begin a blog (in french) : http://initiales-atelier.com/

Comming back soon with pictures.

Best of luck to you.  I think you are taking a reasonable approach to your craft.  I bought some shop equipment (lathe, Mill, etc) with the idea of making pens from scratch.  But I think my initial goals were too complex.  I wanted to make the feeds, clips, and such as well.  Perhaps a more moderate approach would be less daunting.

Of course doing this by hand would result  in the pen being different.

Hard to stay focus on this side project. So many of other project to work on !

But ! I would like to share you many pictures I posted on my Instagram account.

A first : my workshop and my tools because it may be a nice indication about the coherence between my projects and my tools (and my skills, with enough work !).

Guess what is my other job 😅

Then a few pictures of the new batch of fountain pens I am working on All the ebonit and brass parts of the body are done.

It misses all the ends of the cap and the body, many rings and all the clips. I will make it with a mix of silver and ebonit and each pen will be unique (for now). But I need to have many more posts here 😀

Hope you can find this project interesting. Don't hesitate to visit my website (and subscribe to the newsletter, I would offer many gifts for the early subscriber !)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
